Fort Sumter is very important to our history and something that everyone should check out. Just as South Carolina was the first of 11 states to secede from the Union after the election of Abraham Lincoln, Kaleb was the first teen to mutiny against our historical visit to Fort Sumter - (where the first shots of the Civil War rang out).

Maybe it was the time difference or maybe it was hanging out at the beach all night or watching TV into the morning hours, he wouldn’t get out of bed so we left him at the condo and took the other two teens.

Fort Sumter was built on top of a sand bar after the War of 1812, when the British burned our cities after having easy access through Charleston Harbor. In response the US built two forts, Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island.

It took 15 years to build the foundation of Fort Sumter and 30 years to almost finish it. They used four and a half million bricks, made by the enslaved. But it only took two days to destroy it.

When the Civil War started, Fort Sumter wasn’t complete.
Most federal forts weren’t even staffed yet. They had caretakers. There were four federal soldiers in Fort Sumter when the South Carolina militia overtook it. The battle lasted two days, until the federal soldiers gave up because they ran out of supplies. Locals picked them up and ferried them to waiting federal ships.

Those shots against the federal fort, and the subsequent surrender of federal forces is what started the civil war.

At the time of the latest phase of construction, Fort Sumter was way bigger. It was three stories and had four buildings. The lower part is the only surviving level because it was buried by rubble.

And yes. The 2/3 of the teens learned all this.

If you’re in Charleston, this is your sign to take the ferry to Fort Sumter.

It’s simple—no frills, no bathrooms, and yes… technically “just a fort.” But on a beautiful day? The views, the breeze, the history—it all makes for such a peaceful half-day escape.

Sometimes the simplest outings end up being the most memorable.
