ENG 🇬🇧:
I would like to introduce a fantastic fossil from my collection: a highly detailed Keichousaurus sp. 🙌🏼

This specimen is a fossil Keichousaurus sp. (most likely a female), measuring 20 cm in length and preserved on its original matrix. It has been carefully sandblasted to reveal its fine details.

Keichousaurus in general is a genus of marine reptiles belonging to the family Keichousauridae; they lived primarily during the Triassic period, approximately around 245–230 million years ago. The name is derived from Kweichow (in the modern-day the Guizhou Province) in China, where the first fossil was discovered in 1957; the genus was then scientifically described by C. C. Young in 1958. They are among the most frequently found sauropterygian fossils and are often discovered as nearly complete, articulated skeletons, as is clearly evident in this particular specimen.

GER 🇩🇪:

ENG 🇬🇧:
„Lucy“ is a sensation! It is the skull of a young Camarasaurus (sauropod) and one of the most complete in the world! An absolutely amazing piece in the original matrix. 🙌🏼

Photo and preparation from: @palaeonils

Located in @sauriermuseumaathal

The specimen was found in Wyoming (Morrison formation) and initially did not receive much recognition, as it was not expected that a nearly complete skull lay hidden within the rock.

As preparation progressed, more and more bone material was revealed, until a nearly complete Camarasaurus skull - nicknamed „Lucy“ - was exposed.

„Lucy“ is a Camarasaurus that lived 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic. Its age is estimated at around 8 to 10 years, with a length of approximately 6 meters. In addition, there are further bone fragments that will also be prepared soon.

GER 🇩🇪:

ENG 🇬🇧:
Another fully prepared dorsal vertebra from the Allosaurus sp. „Bruce“. Some restoration work was necessary (partly due to a major break running through the vertebra), but overall, the preservation is excellent! The surfaces and color are great.

Swipe to see the preparation process ➡️

The vertebra was positioned right next to another one, with a gap of only 1 mm. This made separating the two vertebrae somehow difficult (especially given the delicate areas involved). Ultimately, however, it all worked out well, and both vertebrae were seperated.

The vertebra has been fully prepared; the final steps involved making restorations and reattaching a missing fragment. ✅

•

GER 🇩🇪:

Sam Neill – what a legend! Rest in peace! 🕊️
1947 - 2026

Jurassic Park was one of the reasons I do what I do today. It sparked my passion for dinosaurs, and Dr. Alan Grant was a huge part of that! The film series was a constant companion throughout my childhood and remains an important part of my life today. Thank you for a wonderful childhood and for fueling that passion! That will likely shape my life. 🦖

It was also a pleasure following his life beyond his acting career; it showed me what kind of person he was. A good one! @samneilltheprop

Unbelievable.

I’m holding the complete & articulated! forelimb of a sauropod in my hands.

The largest animals ever to walk on land… although holding the forelimb of a fully grown sauropod like this would obviously be impossible. This is the miniature version, the left leg of „Toni“. 🦕

For scientific analyses and high-resolution MicroCT scanning, I carefully extracted the entire forelimb rock matrix. We still don’t know exactly which species ; family 🫶🏼baby sauropod “Toni” belongs to, and every new piece of information brings us one step closer to the answer.

But don’t worry—nothing is being lost.

Before removing the limb, I left & marked precise reference points on both the surrounding matrix and the bone itself. After the scans and scientific studies are complete, the forelimb can be returned to its original in-situ position with exceptional accuracy.

Sometimes, we have to take unusual paths to achieve the best possible scientific results.

Why is „Toni“ so important?
Juvenile sauropod bones are among the rarest fossils in vertebrate paleontology. „Toni” is exceptionally complete, offering a unique opportunity to study the anatomy, growth, and identity of a baby giant that lived around 154 million years ago.

A huge thank you to our operating surgeon 🥼 @fossilien.dens for assisting with this prehistoric operation. The patient survived—and is now ready for science! 🦕❤️‍🩹🔬

🦕🔬my guess is: Diplodocid-ae 🤌🏻

ENG 🇬🇧:
Some time ago, we showed you the left frontal of Allosaurus sp. „Bruce“ during the preparation process.

It’s been finished for quite a while now, but we haven’t shown the results yet.

So here you can see the final result. A fantastic coloration with incredible surface preservation and lots of detail! We can promise that the finished skull will be amazing! 🙌🏼

Side note: We leave some sediment on the inner surfaces because the bone structure there is very thin and the sediment provides additional support to these points and helps prevent breakage during the bone assembly.

@sauriermuseumaathal

GER 🇩🇪:

🦖 This bone once sat above the eye of a Jurassic predator.

In my hand: the left frontal of „Bruce“ our Allosaurus!

A key element of the skull roof, forming part of the margin of the orbit and connecting the nasal and parietal region of the skull.

This bone forms part of the dorsal margin of the orbit and contributes to the roof of the brain cavity.

Check the 3. Picture!
The beautifully preserved cranial sutures are clearly visible, suggesting the animal was likely juvenile or subadult, as these sutures fuse progressively with maturity.

ENG 🇬🇧:
The before -> after result of a rib from an Allosaurus that I prepared. Detailed work was carried out, stabilization and then additions were made (filling cracks & adding missing original bone material). The entire working time here only lasted a few hours and went really well.

The rib comes from an Allosaurus juvenile, but the species has not yet been defined in more detail and still needs to be determined after all the bones have been prepared.

Project for: @sauriermuseumaathal

GER 🇩🇪:
