Thread painting is my absolute JAM. Bronte was the star of the show, so obvs she needed it!

I layered about 15 different DMC colors for her fur and it was so fun watching it come to life. This is the part of embroidery that I could do forever.

Happy World Embroidery Day. These are a throw back to a couple of pieces I’ve stitched from patterns by other artists.

I love making portraits, but every once in a while it’s refreshing to stitch someone else’s design and to learn new techniques.

Today I was reading The Midnight Train by Matt Haig and came across this line:

“Sometimes the biggest moments in a lifetime are also the smallest.”

I thought it was a lovely sentiment.

I stitched this portrait of my niece and nephew. I made it for my sister’s family, but my nephew has already claimed it as his own—and honestly, I can’t think of a better compliment.

Every once in a while (ok, often) I come across a photo that immediately feels like embroidery. This was one of them. @megbrookephotography captured this First Look moment that felt so intimate and tender. I had to stitch it.

I loved how the lines naturally simplified without losing what made the moment special. Sometimes the small, quiet moments of a big day are the most important to remember.

Fun fact: This is actually the second version of this portrait. I finished an entire hoop before this one and realized it wasn’t capturing the feeling I wanted, so I started over from the beginning. I’d done the hoop on cream fabric with whites to match the gown and suit. Hated it. Felt like using it as a frisbee 😅 Throwing out hours of work sucked, but the crisp black and white vibe was ✨ So glad I started over.

If there’s something I love almost as much as stitching, it’s organization. 😎

When I lost my grandma last year, I inherited over 300 skeins of embroidery thread. A few were already wound and labeled in her handwriting and those are extra special.

Adding all that thread to my stash meant I needed a better system. These color cards from @tidystitch and my very nerdy thread spreadsheet help me keep track of what I have on hand.

The best part? It’s organized and pretty.

Portrait embroidery is not limited to people. There are so many special places, buildings, and landscapes that are close to our hearts. 🤍🤍

My husband and I lived in his hometown of Miami early in our relationship. Our first apartment was in a 1940’s Art Deco hotel. It backed up to the beach and I always imagined the glamorous people who stayed there before us in its heyday.

This was one of the first embroidery portraits I stitched. It brought back the nostalgia of the early days in the city that I learned to love guava pastelitos, plantains, and all the Cuban food ever.
