A monk once asked his Master, “What is the greatest thief of life?” The Master replied, “Come, I will show you.”

He took the monk to a garden at sunrise. The flowers opened, glowing in the morning light. The air was fresh and full of birdsong. But the Master covered the monk’s eye with a cloth.

“Now sit” he said. Hours passed. The monk grew restless. “Master, what am I supposed to see?” Finally, the Master removed the cloth. The sun was setting. The flowers were closing.

The monk gasped, “I missed the whole day!” The Master said softly, “Yes, and this is the greatest thief of life: Not anger. Not Fear. Not Death. It is not being present.”

" The day was beautiful, but because you weren’t here for it, it was lost forever.” Life is not stolen in years. It is stolen in moments you weren’t awake for. Be here. Now. Be present.
