To the whole world, Christopher Reeve was Superman. His 1978 film turned an unknown into the definitive Man of Steel and grossed over 300 million dollars, invincible and untouchable on screen. Then a single afternoon took all of it away.On May 27, 1995, at a riding event in Virginia, his horse refused a jump and Reeve fell headfirst, shattering the top two vertebrae in his neck. He was paralyzed from the neck down and could not breathe without a machine. He later admitted he thought about ending his life, until his wife Dana told him he was still himself and that she loved him. He chose to live, and then he chose to work. Paralyzed and on a ventilator, he directed an HBO film and earned an Emmy nomination.He founded a research center and fought Washington for spinal cord funding, helping push the national research budget from 12 billion to over 27 billion dollars. "Grace Hopper is why we call software glitches bugs, and in her case it was literal. In 1947, working on an early Navy computer at Harvard, her team traced a failure to a moth stuck in one of the machine's relays. They removed it, taped it into the logbook, and noted the first actual case of a bug being found.The joke stuck, but Hopper's real legacy was bigger. Alfred Nobel got the rare chance to read his own obituary while still alive, and he hated it. In 1888 his brother Ludvig died in France, and a French newspaper mixed up the brothers and ran Alfred’s obituary by mistake.The report is said to have called him a merchant of death, a man who got rich finding new ways to kill people. Nobel had invented dynamite, held 355 patents, and built more than 90 factories making explosives. Seeing his life summed up that way shook him.He kept the reaction private, but in 1895 he signed a new will, leaving roughly 94 percent of his estate, more than 31 million kronor, to create prizes for people who benefited humanity.He died in 1896. "Karen Silkwood was 28, a lab technician at a Kerr-McGee plant near Crescent, Oklahoma that made plutonium fuel. She was also a union activist who believed workers were being exposed to danger, and she started quietly gathering evidence.In early November 1974 she tested positive for plutonium at nearly 400 times the legal limit. Investigators found traces throughout her apartment. How she was contaminated is still argued about today.On the night of November 13 she left a union meeting and drove toward Oklahoma City to hand a folder of documents to a New York Times reporter. She never made it. Her car left the road and crashed, and the folder she was said to be carrying was not found in the wreck.Her family sued.
