POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
So finally I feel a bit more coherent to actually say something! May is always an "odd" month for me when it's th anniversary month of losing my son.

I went in to this field to help animals after struggling to get to the bottom of my horses pain, wanting to always strive for answers and be their voice when they don't have one.

My clinic was set up after losing Noah and realising I wanted a better work life balance but also to have more time to help more animals! And this drive is continued since having my daughter, to teach her about being kind to animals is just the best 💜

So thank you all, for making Four Amigos Veterinary Physiotherapy everything I wanted and more!

⭐️FACT FRIDAY!⭐️

This month, some information about the benefits of Physiotherapy for dogs!

⁉️What is Veterinary Physiotherapy?

Veterinary Physiotherapy is a science based profession that has a holistic approach to animal health. It involves assessing movement and posture, and aims to reduce pain and restore musculoskeletal health and function. Clinical reasoning is employed to determine what supportive therapies to utilise to aid healing and improve recovery rates, and provides remedial exercises to optimise healing, movement, and tissue strength.

✅ Does it work? The science…

“Research indicates that rehabilitation is useful for the treatment of various orthopedic and neurologic conditions.” (Mills and Ciuperca, 2015).

Dogs with muscle strain and neurological weakness benefitted from physiotherapy where medical management failed with improved function and quality of life noted within 2 weeks of treatment (Ratnu and Parikh, 2022).

Physiotherapy improves surgical outcomes and reduces healing time for TPLOs following cruciate ligament injury (Marcellin-Little and Arnoldy, 2018), and following IVDD surgery (Hady and Shwarz, 2015).

Physiotherapy can decrease pain, improve mobility, and improve longevity in animals with osteoarthritis (Johnston et al. 2008), and following joint surgery (Stievani et al. 2018).

Physiotherapy before and during the agility season produced statistically significantly better movement patterns and mobility and flexibility scores when compared to dogs who did not receive physiotherapy treatments. Additionally treated dogs showed improved scores at the end of the season compared to non treated dogs who obtained worse scores at the end of the season indicating fatigue and potential injuries (Gulda and Lik, 2018).

🙌🏼 Conclusion:

Physiotherapy is a great tool for injury rehab, for maintenance of chronic conditions, and to increase performance and prevent injury!

A new year is starting and so I wanted to reintroduce myself!

🫣Who is behind the brand?
Hi! I am Chloe, I started off as an equine and canine massage therapist in 2013 before embarking on a post graduate qualification in veterinary physiotherapy in 2019! I am also a qualified riding instructor also. I have over 20 years of equine experience, 8 canine, and I am also a lecturer at Writtle University College.

🐎Why did you choose the name?
It is based on my old horse called Alfie whose race name was Four Amigos (USA). And as my therapy inspiration came from him, I felt it was only fitting! It is also a play on words of our pets being our four legged friends, as amigos means friends in Spanish!

🖍️What do the colours of the brand mean?
So I wanted to be a bit different to other therapists out there, and pick colours that suit my personality and ethos. The coral colour means warmth, energy, and harmony, I want my clients to feel happy and confident with me. Black means power, intelligence and formality, and I aim to be professional as-well-as always explain why I am doing what I am doing during therapy sessions. And white means simplicity, hope, and goodness and I aim to make things simple for my owners and give them hope to really help their animals.

🐴Do you prefer horses or dogs?🐶
So my work initially started with horses! I have a degree and masters degree in equine performance and my passion for equine therapy came from my old horse Alfie. But in recent years I have really become invested in dogs, especially with my current dog Bea who I dapple in agility with and has bilateral luxating patella so needs constant management!….So really…I don’t have a favourite, I love both! 💛

🐾Why is the canine clinic called “The Ark”?
In 2022 I sadly lost my son during pregnancy, we named him Noah, so the clinic name is a tribute to him!🪽

🕔Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Still teaching in some way or another I hope! I love sharing my knowledge…so more webinars and clinics would also be awesome. I love learning and becoming better so becoming “known” in the workd of vet physio by other therapists and sporting worlds alike would be amazing!

THIS is why regular maintenance physio for your sporting dog matters‼️

Which here came for his regular session, he’d seemed fine except his owner noted he looked at his hind end on the right once during their conditioning work.

We walked him up and one “skip” of that right hindlimb was noticed, circling wise he struggled more to the left to extend the RH round. Then on palpation his psoas muscle (being treated in the image) was slightly tense and he lip licked when I was palpating, and his hip abduction during range of motion was slightly reduced.

So we’ve picked up a muscle strain really really early meaning it can be treated super easily and prevents it progressing to a tear that would need further veterinary diagnostics and treatment 🙌🏼

Happy me, happy owner, happy dog 🥰 by @fouramigosvp

Why would your horse benefit from physio?

🐎 We aren’t all built perfectly…and certain “faults” can predispose to issues, so knowing their normal and strengthening them accordingly can prevent injuries and slow down the development of issues such as osteoarthritis
🐎 When we ride them we should assess their comfort levels regularly
🐎 If they do a sport it can improve performance and recovery, and prevent injury
🐎 If they have a known issue, it can assist with recovery and slowing down the progression of the issue/ prevent re-injury
🐎 It can assist young animals with correct growth, and older animals by improving comfort and reducing pain
🐎 Physical comfort is linked to mental wellbeing…physio can assist with behavioural issues by identifying underlying physical causes and improving comfort

Animal obesity is a huge welfare concern.

I see many musculoskeletal problems caused by or exacerbated by being overweight. Many owners go by weigh scales, which isn’t always the most useful indicator of if your animal is on the slightly chubbier side! Sadly being “rounder” has become the normal so many do not notice the issue, or many people can feel overwhelmed by how to combat the issue or guilt for causing it so ignore the issue!

However I have attached body condition scoring charts that you can use to assess your animals to keep on top of them, and part of a physio consult is discussing weight and ways to help lose the excess! But for more specialist support speak to a vet or nutritionist! ☺️ by @fouramigosvp

Did you know physio is a “holistic therapy”? As in it aims to treat the entire animal as one being and not just one specific issue. It’s not just animals that have a specific injury that can benefit from physio. I could add a whole load of scientific evidence to this post…but I’m going to keep in simple!

All the things physio can help with….
✔️Anxiety reduction and improving confidence through conditioning and improving comfort levels
✔️ Improve handling confidence
✔️Bonding with their caregiver through the home exercise plan
✔️Pain reduction (and in some cases reduce pain medication use)
✔️Prevent injury through body conditioning for performance animals
✔️Performance enhancement
✔️Improve mobility of aging animals
✔️Prevent injury of animals with poor conformation (physical structure) through postural conditioning
✔️Slow progression of degenerative conditions
✔️Help as an assessment tool to locate areas of pain and dysfunction to aid veterinary diagnosis of musculoskeletal/neural issues
✔️Mental stimulation/enrichment with the home exercises
✔️ Reduce compensatory dysfunction
✔️ Improve healing of an injury

I’m sure I’ll keep adding more to this list as I think of more…! But basically ALL animals can benefit…rescue animals with physical and mental scars, horses who are ridden (even happy hackers), or dogs who go running with their owners…animals with imperfect conformation (and let’s face it who is perfect?!)
