The parachute and the windsock have returned!

Bunting/flags for the garden to “encourage” the deer to take a new path over the rocks instead of on the area I’m trying to “rewild” … might work 🧦🐒🤔

It’s #bagtuesday … today we’re batch sewing tote bag handles from scraps.

Pieces of heavy red canvas wrapped with scraps of navy cotton poplin and topstitched. Swipe for the construction details.

Butt the canvas pieces together (don’t overlap them) and connect with bits of fusible interfacing. If you don’t have a collection of fusible interfacing bits (mine are decades old), a scrap bit of fabric and a glue stick will work or scrap bit of fabric and some top stitch. Not looking for strength here, just trying to hold it in place. Cut to desired width and length - 1 inch wide gives about 1 1/8 inch after it’s wrapped due to turn of fabric. I use handles of 25 or 27 inches long.

Cut cotton poplin strips to enough width to wrap and turn under, I use 3 1/2 to 4 inches wide for 1 inch wide canvas. If needed, join the strips using seams on a 45 degree angle, to get the desired length.

Lay the cotton poplin wrong side down on the canvas, and baste along the raw edge. Wrap the cotton poplin around the canvas and turn under the raw edge, top stitch along both edges of the handle. I think a generous 1/8 inch from the edge.

There are lots of great videos that show how to wrap a handle for a tote, including clever fold and wrap over the ends to get a neat finish if you’re sewing these handles to the outside of the bag. The key takeaway in this post is making a sturdy handle from scraps … #usewhatyouhave 👍

#mondaymending … tiny bit of the underarm seam “popped” in this #memade merino jersey base layer … sometimes a quick backstitch by hand (very stretchy) in matching thread is quicker than changing the needle and the thread in the machine … the 100% merino fabric still looks great after two years of hard wearing … and we all know I love my Tees!

It’s #bagtuesday … and we’ve stayed in (because it’s raining) and made another bag for @dressforsuccessokanagan …

Started with some pant legs cut off of my Dad’s jeans to make shorts … added some denim scraps and quilting cotton donated to my stash as lining.

Swipe to see the details but no sock monkey load testing. They tell me the elephants on the lining are heavy enough … 🧦🐒🤔

#mondaymending
The top of my outdoor umbrella cover was shredded in last winter’s storms. I washed and dried it at the start of the season and it has been sitting in the mending pile since last spring.

Reinforcing with some fusible interfacing and three step zigzag, then an overall patch with a bit from the wind sock hiding in my stash.

Just in time to put the umbrella to bed as Autumn is upon us.

Norman the #sockmonkey and I are late for #fashiononthesofafriday but just in time for #sagamseasonseptember with @whendy7 @suestoney and @sewing_in_spain

It’s “shoulder season” here in the Okanagan … some rain, some heat, cool temps at night and snow at Big White … pants are in order but still something loose, comfy, slightly cropped with a cuff, elastic waist with a drawstring, and pockets … of course, pockets. Swipe for the details.

Pattern is “somewhat” rubbed off an old RTW but widened the leg, scooped the crotch curve, changed the waistband, added the pockets and cuffs …. 🤔

Fabric is medium weight cotton twill donated to my stash some years ago (thanks @elainekelowna 😊). Pocket bags are an old pillowcase and inner waistband is scraps of gingham leftover from an upcycle of vintage aprons into a top. Definitely #2fromstashamonth with @salixsews and @septemberfaden

And of course, the t-shirt is me-made 😉

Is it a quilt or a play mat? … Doesn’t matter … drag it around the yard and then throw it in the wash.

Improv fish from scraps … quilting cotton from my stash … all 🧦🐒s on hand to help with assembly … soft cotton batting (wadding) in the middle sandwich layer … free motion quilting on my trusty Pfaff … squiggles for the win.

It has been reported to this great auntie that the fish arrived in the mail and are making the wee one giggle.

#mondaymending … stitching on the waistband of this pair of stretch woven pants has begun to unravel … it’s a chain stitch so don’t pull that thread!!! Sorry but no before photos … about six inches of the waistband had come undone and was fraying quite dramatically 😳

Tie and secure the thread ends, hand stitch the edge of the waistband back into place from the inside, then top stitch from the outside. Done and secure 😊.

What have you been mending these days?
