Northfield Brook is a small stream running through Oxford that quietly bridges one of England’s starkest socio-economic divides.

Multimedia artist Rawz traces the brook’s path through neglected housing estates and affluent neighbourhoods, reflecting on class, memory and belonging in a city shaped by inequality.

Blending personal narrative, sound art and poetry, the piece considers water as both a physical boundary and a living archive of community and survival.

Ayodeji Ayodele presents Omi L’eko, translating to “the water of Lagos.” This photo essay explores water as a living force that shapes identity, survival, and memory in the city.

In Lagos, water is never passive. It supports daily life, fuels creativity, and exposes deep social and environmental inequalities.

Drawing from Yoruba understandings of water as spiritual and historical, the lagoon becomes both a lifeline and a witness. It holds stories of trade, migration, resilience, and neglect. Here, water is political. It reflects who adapts, who is protected, and who is left vulnerable.

Omi L’eko invites viewers to see water not as background, but as an active presence shaping culture, creativity, and the rhythm of life in Lagos.

Tainted Waters is a photo series by Prince El-sha Martey documenting life along Ghana’s polluted rivers, lagoons and coastlines.

As part of Fourth Floor’s open call on water, the series traces how contamination reshapes health, work, ritual and everyday life, while revealing the quiet resilience of communities adapting to environmental harm.

Martey captures both the lasting impact of pollution and the ongoing efforts to restore balance between people, place and water.

Eau à Eau is a visual exploration inspired by the Haitian Vodou spirit LaSirenn: a water spirit associated with identity, self-reflection, fluidity, and feminine strength. In Haitian mythology, LaSirenn is often portrayed as a siren who guides individuals through personal journeys of transformation and self-discovery.

In this project, Sophie Ackroyd draws from these mythological roots to interpret water as a metaphor for the inner self—ever-shifting, reflective, and fluid. She uses cyanotype, with its timeless Prussian blue tones, to evoke the presence of water both thematically and materially. As a process that relies largely on water for development, cyanotype becomes both the subject and the method, emphasising water’s role in life and creation.
She incorporates mixed media elements by sewing beads onto the fabric—each one reflecting the hues of water, sunlight or reflections. The tactile addition of beadwork brings a sense of movement and depth, echoing the nature of myth and water.

Like water, this project is fluid and evolving. Through it, Sophie aims to create a piece of art that is both visually compelling and rooted in mythological narratives that continue to shape contemporary practice. by @fourthfloor__
