Something wicked this way comes... 🗡️

Issue 2 of The Fourth Wall is here, and we are going all in on Shakespeare. Produced in partnership with @bellshakespeare , consider this your guide to the Bard in the modern era, from Oscar winners and chart-toppers to the runway and the rehearsal room.

Inside this issue we look at the current Shakespearaissance, go inside Macbeth with cover man Anthony Taufa, dive into Shakespeare 101 (where to start if you’ve never started) and chat to Artistic Director Peter Evans on gender, power and corruption in Bell Shakespeare’s 2027 season.

Before a show, Aussie performers don’t say 'good luck'. They say 'chookas'. But why? 🐔

Our writer Siriol Dafydd went down the rabbit hole on one of Australian theatre’s strangest traditions. The story involves ghosts, superstition, “break a leg”, and a theory that it’s all about whether the cast could afford a roast chook after the show.

On this week’s episode of The Front Row, Gaynor Wheatley sits down with @scottiehendo to reflect on her life alongside Glenn Wheatley, taking on the management of John Farnham, and the story behind the iconic Whispering Jack album.

Hear Gaynor share behind-the-scenes stories from John’s extraordinary career and discuss bringing that story to the stage as co-producer of @whisperingjackmusical

Get a room… also, get loud about Aussie music 🧑‍❤️‍💋‍🧑

Australian music is projected to make up just 5 per cent of all audio streaming by 2030, so @AusifyAU is asking you to show some PDA (Public Displays of Ausify) all November.

That means blasting local tracks, wearing the merch, changing your go-to karaoke song, or even getting that slightly embarrassing lyric tattoo. @missyhigginsmusic, @oneruel, @budjerah, @beccaxhatch and @benleemusic are all on board, and it won’t cost you a cent.

Are we witnessing a Shakespearaissance, or did Will never really leave the cultural convo? 💀

Lately, it feels like the Bard is everywhere. @taylorswift is Ophelia-mogging, @RAYE has Shakespeare on the WhatsApp group chat, Jessie Buckley took home an Oscar for Hamnet, Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga sold out 15 weeks of Macbeth on Broadway, ruffs and corsets are strutting down the runways at Dior and McQueen... And if you’ve ever binged Succession, you’ve watched King Lear in a boardroom.

So is it a revival, or have we just never stopped falling for jealousy, ambition, heartbreak and a good disguise? We dug into why every generation rediscovers him, and what’s next for the Bard on Australian stages thanks to @bellshakespeare.
