‘Slightly Foxed is a great gift for someone who really loves to read. It’s a wonderful British quarterly where people write short essays about the books they love – not new books, but the ones they’ve loved the most.’ – Gretchen Rubin, The Happiness Project Slightly Foxed is the beautifully produced quarterly magazine for booklovers. It’s rather a different kind of book review – more like a bookish friend, really, than a literary periodical. Companionable and unstuffy, each quarter it offers 96 pages of personal recommendations for books of lasting interest, old and new. It’s an eclectic mix, covering all the main categories of literature – fiction and non-fiction - and our contributors are an eclectic bunch too. Some of them are names you’ll have heard of, some not, but they all write thoughtfully, elegantly and entertainingly. When you subscribe to Slightly Foxed you don’t just buy a literary magazine, you also join a club of discerning and eager book lovers. We’ve been going for over twenty years now, and readers around the world tell us that Slightly Foxed has filled a gap in their lives, opening up new horizons, introducing them to hitherto unknown writers and reintroducing them to old favourites too. A subscription would make the perfect bookish gift for a friend who loves to read, or a treat for oneself. In recent and upcoming issues: ARIANE BANKES spends one fine day with Mollie Panter-Downs • ROHAN CANDAPPA channels his inner Victorian gentleman • FRANCES DONNELLY pays homage to Iris Murdoch • CHRIS SAUNDERS traces the Origin of the Species • LUCY BECKETT examines Simenon’s Pedigree • CLARE MULLEY takes a library tour • TIM PEARS flies kites with Romain Gary • OLIVIA POTTS tears up the culinary rule book with Arabella Boxer • BRYAN APPLEYARD finds hope in a terrifying novel • GRANT MCINTYRE is haunted by The Turn of the Screw • ROSE LYDDON goes Offshore with Penelope Fitzgerald • SUZI FEAY joins Dickens’s Pickwick Club • MARGARET DRABBLE travels to Italy • DAVID PROFUMO meets the James Joyce of folklore • JOANNA QUINN is intrigued by a literary love triangle • SARAH PERRY takes a physics lesson and much more besides . . . ‘The business of reading s by @foxedquarterly
The Slightly Foxed Podcast, Episode 59: Rosemary Sutcliff and the Magic of Childhood Reading | Out now! There is nothing more exciting than seeing children captivated by the magic of stories, and for many of us there’s no better children’s storyteller than Rosemary Sutcliff. Rebeka Russell, publisher of Manderley Press @manderleypress, joins us to share her enthusiasm for the author who inspired her love of literature at a young age and reads from her favourite of Sutcliff’s many books, The Armourer’s House. Our second guest, Sam Leith, author of The Haunted Wood: A History of Childhood Reading, and literary editor of The Spectator @spectator1828, then takes us into the enchanted world of children’s books and we discuss the importance of both childhood reading and reading to children. This episode’s recommended reads were Carlo Rovelli’s @carlitorovelli On the Equality of All Things, Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s @frank_cottrellboyce A British Childhood and Susan Hill’s series featuring the detective Simon Serailler. Please click the link in bio to tune in to this episode on our website, or listen wherever you find your podcasts. 🎧️🦊 by @foxedquarterly
‘It is a bookshop that – I hope – you can lose yourself in for hours, and discover books that will open up whole new worlds.’ 📚️ Autumn Bookshop of the Quarter 2026 | Topping & Company, York @toppingsyork We were thrilled to hear that Topping & Company had opened a new bookshop in York, after many years of browsing the shelves in their Bath, Edinburgh, Ely and St Andrews branches. Managers Duncan and Saskia were kind enough to share the joys of bookselling and their favourite reads amidst an inevitably busy summer in York, just a few months after opening. This magnificent space is already abuzz with bookish discussions and exciting events, a new literary hub that we can’t wait to visit in person soon. Please click the link in bio to read our interview with Duncan and Saskia by @foxedquarterly
‘Domestic horror’ is a term often applied to Jackson’s works, a phrase that refers to a ‘horror within the family’. But it is important to note that it is not the domesticity, not the cooking or the cleaning, not the relationship between the sisters, that is the horror here . . . Nor is the horror here something lurking in the cellar or something supernatural. The horror is in the weight of the home, the conventional patriarchal family structure. It is the social and domestic burden on women. It is the constantly watchful townsfolk, ‘their flat grey faces with the hating eyes’ . . . – Kate Young @kateyoungwrites on Shirley Jackson, We Have Always Lived in the Castle in Slightly Foxed Issue 79. Read the full article via the link in bio. by @foxedquarterly
On Saturday, we had the pleasure of hosting this year’s Readers’ Day at our usual haunt – the @ArtWorkersGuild in Bloomsbury. We enjoyed talks from a brilliant line-up of speakers – all hugely appreciated by our audience, many of whom said it was our best yet. Sara Wheeler spoke about her biography of Jan Morris, the travel writer who famously climbed Everest and underwent gender-affirming surgery in 1972, whom she described as ‘James Bond meets Joan Rivers’. Next, Ben Short @benshortdorset chatted to Suzi Feay @suzisbookbag about leaving behind a high-pressure life in London for Dorset, where he became a charcoal burner – an experience captured beautifully in his memoir Burn. Julian Evans @thejulianevans shared his decades-long love affair with the Ukrainian city of Odesa. In Undefeatable he captures the spirit of this beautiful and unique city with profound insight. We were captivated by the conversation between Booker Prize-winning author Sir Ben Okri @sirbenokri and our podcast host, Rosie Goldsmith @rosiegoldsmith1. We heard about his most recent novel, Waking the Warriors, as well as his collaborative project with artist Rosemary Clunie @rosemaryclunieart , The True Artist Breaks Out of Jail, which explores words, images and the creative process. The day ended with Tom Hodgkinson, editor of the @idlermagazine, who gave a talk on Stoicism, delivered with his customary charm. He has written a brilliantly entertaining book on the subject called How to Live Like a Stoic. We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the speakers and to the Art Workers’ Guild for welcoming us back once again. Our thanks also goes to Blandy’s @blandysmadeirawine, who generously donated the Madeira that was enjoyed with cake during the afternoon break, as well as tote bags, filled with contributions from the likes of @cambridgeimprint, @beautifulbookco and @cornucopiamagazine and given to each ticket holder. And of course, a huge thank you to everyone who came along and made the day so special. It was a delight to meet so many subscribers in person. We hope to see you next year! 📷 @jenharrisonbunning @stephallennewell @rosiegoldsmith1 by @foxedquarterly
‘A farm horse stood alone in a meadow, backed by trees. Amid the still green bosoms of the oaks occurred spurts and sprays of autumn’s fire colour. The shadow of a sparrow on the road was a foot long, and the horse’s shadow lengthened to a spire . . . ’ 🍂 To celebrate autumn, we are delighted to let you know that we’re offering 20% off A Countryman’s Autumn Notebook until the end of October. These little essays which so vividly evoke the arrival of autumn, are both a breath of fresh Suffolk air, and a call to look around us at the countryside and do things differently. Add code OCTOBERBELL for 20% off A Countryman’s Autumn Notebook by @foxedquarterly

Meet the Speakers | Slightly Foxed Readers’ Day 2026 Sara Wheeler | Jan Morris: A Life Renowned travel writer and biographer Sara Wheeler uncovers the complexity of this twentieth-century icon to reveal a mosaic of contradictions. Morris’s work conjured the spirit of place, yet her masterpiece Trieste celebrates ‘the meaning of nowhere’; she was a Welsh nationalist who wasn’t Welsh; a preacher of kindness with a cruel side. This is a portrait of an astonishing life, and a scintillating story of longing, travel and never reaching home. ‘For a bookish child, discovering more about the ancient world in which [Rosemary Sutcliff] was so at home was unadulterated pleasure. Her Romans became more immediate, fallible, brave, attractive and alarming than anyone I ever encountered in outer Surrey. Reading her, history came brilliantly and noisily to life, and was to remain a lasting passion for all of us who came under her spell . . . ’ – Sue Gaisford on Rosemary Sutcliff, Frontier Wolf & The Lantern Bearers in Slightly Foxed Issue 67. The full set of Rosemary Sutcliff’s historical books for children is available from Slightly Foxed in hand-numbered, clothbound editions in gorgeous autumnal tones. The series is the perfect gift to inspire a love of history for bookish children, or, indeed excellent reading for nostalgic adults.📙🍂 by @foxedquarterly
‘For a character in a Golden Age story to consume chocolates sent by an anonymous benefactor was invariably fraught with danger . . . ’ ‘Berkeley was a highly influential figure during the so-called “Golden Age of detective fiction” between the two world wars. Golden Age detective fiction is often misunderstood as “cosy” but is really better regarded as a reaction to tragedy and horror. After years of slaughter – and an influenza pandemic that claimed even more lives – people just wanted to have fun. They craved escapism, and detective novelists (including those, like Berkeley, who had been seriously wounded in the conflict) supplied it in the form of whodunnits that allowed readers to compete with a fictional detective in solving a labyrinthine murder case.’ – Martin Edwards on The Poisoned Chocolates Case by Anthony Berkeley in Slightly Foxed Issue 72 🦊🍫 Anthony Berkeley was once spoken about in the same breath as Agatha Christie but over the years his work has been slowly forgotten. If you are a fan of detective books he is certainly an author worth exploring. Please do head to the link in bio to find out more about this title. 📚️ by @foxedquarterly
Can you recall the novel that took you away from the nursery bookshelves and into the realms of Grown-Up Books – a gateway book, if you like? . . . I happened upon mine after months of resisting efforts both at home and at school to get me to read something more challenging. Until then, as a pony-mad child without a pony, I’d sought refuge in my tattered copies of thrilling stories like Show-Jumping Secret and We Hunted Hounds by the Pullein-Thompson sisters. Then one day, entirely of my own volition, when I was perhaps 12 or 13, I reached for the blue, cloth-bound copy of Siegfried Sassoon’s Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man. Most readers encounter Sassoon as the brave soldier-poet with the Military Cross, the mentor of Wilfred Owen, who has shaped our thinking on the First World War perhaps more than anyone else . . . But that afternoon, as I devoured the first of Sassoon’s three volumes of lightly fictionalized autobiography, I met him as a boy in the person of his alter-ego George Sherston, clip-clopping to a distant meet alongside Dixon the groom, his fingers numb and a melting hoarfrost on the hedgerows. – Flora Watkins @subs_please_check on Siegfried Sassoon’s Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man in Slightly Foxed Issue 79 🦊📚️ by @foxedquarterly
‘If only people knew about Dorothy Whipple, I feel their lives would be so enriched,’ I remember the founder of Persephone Books @persephonebooks remarking thoughtfully when I interviewed her for a profile of the firm for the very first issue of Slightly Foxed. And how right she was. It took me a long time – almost twenty years in fact – to catch up with Dorothy Whipple, and although I have enjoyed her fiction, which is compulsively readable, it is her childhood memoir, The Other Day (1936), that has touched and entertained me most. – Slightly Foxed co-founder Hazel Wood in SF Issue 83 Have you read Dorothy Whipple’s fiction and enjoyed it? If so, you may also like her memoir The Other Day, which is available in a hand-numbered Slightly Foxed Edition. 🦊📘 by @foxedquarterly
