Excited to see my beloved “Maddie” in the Fall issue of The Cottage Journal that’s on newsstands July 15. Ben Ashby is the new Editor in Chief and he’s done an incredible job. I devoured all the stories from front to back! Kudos also to Jared Barton for some wonderfully evocative writing. Pick up a copy if you can, I know you’ll really enjoy it. Maddie has been our labor of love and dream home project. When Tim and I found it, it had suffered years of serious neglect and abandonment. We poured ourselves into restoring and improving every aspect of it, doing our best to consider even the smallest detail, keeping it personal to us and the things we love like textured walls, as just one example. I created an oyster shell fireplace wall and Tim masterfully added Roman clay to the foyer and stairwell. The interiors also are a reflection of the Dorchester County setting where herons and other shore birds fill the skies overhead. The games room has amazing pink wallpaper with huge herons made by @fineanddandyco and it’s just perfectly dramatic. All to say, Maddie is our happy place and we’re so thrilled to have it shared with the magazine’s readers. ..@by.byrd @benashby @jaredabarton #bybyrd #oldhouses #oldhouselove #americanfoursquare by @foxfireliving

This was my writing nook in the loft of the first cottage we lived in on the Esopus Creek in the Catskills, NY. I wrote most of our Foxfire Living book there and it was generally a place of inspiration and creativity. We moved from that home after a few years to a larger house that I never quite managed to fall in love with. Now, we’re back living in a small cottage perched high above a river once again (the majestic Hudson River this time) and I’m feeling the creative juices flowing that I now understand come from being rooted and inspired by my surroundings. I’m immensely grateful. by @foxfireliving

Our summer home kitchen feels to me like it’s always been there, even though we started with a space that had been fully gutted and abandoned to neglect by the last owner. See the last photo Before pic to glimpse the state of things at the beginning. We added a beadboard ceiling stained a warm dark walnut, floor tiles we had left over from another project, a marine rope handrail on the narrow stairs up to the second floor (not the main stairs), butcher block counters, and a freestanding hutch that fills the entire wall. Pots and pans are hidden behind the curtain across the bottom shelf. There’s a small pantry off the kitchen and a little breakfast area. It’s a happy space and the size suits us perfectly. ...#bybyrd #thecottagejournal #slowlivingforlife #summerkitchen #countrylivingmag by @foxfireliving

We’ve been in the cottage two and a half months now and the Hudson River is still mostly covered with ice. I’m dying to get outside and start to work on the gardens, though it’s been fun to get the rooms set up inside....#logcabin #logcottage #loghome #thecottagejournal by @foxfireliving

Found this little vintage needlepoint picture when out antiquing and it reminded of the large painting we have in the upstairs hallway. by @foxfireliving

From the first time I viewed the log home we were considering buying, I knew the wood walls were beautiful but sucked in light. The dining room windows had green plastic mullions between the glass. I’m not a big fan of fake materials and so voila! My beautiful new picture window that gives us the most incredible view of the Hudson River and lets the light pour in all day. by @foxfireliving
