Incremental progress is still progress, and I’ll take it.

This last year, I’ve been reconnecting with climbing after over a decade of full time routesetting. I was hoping that as the physical grind eased, I would instantly gain strength.

Instead, it’s been slower and honestly a bit frustrating. My weightlifting gains have been huge, but the climbing has been slow to follow. I didn’t have any expectations going to Hueco this season, just wanted to wiggle and have fun with friends.

But I surprised myself with my performance in steep terrain. Turns out the added strength pays off. Things I couldn’t touch before feel within reach. No big sends this trip, but huge progress. Clear goals for the future.

Find friends who cheer you on. Find joy in little steps forward. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Take the bite.

I had the honor of spending the last week of 2025 helping with the opening set of @castleclimbingclub , a fantastic new space in west Seattle. While I spend most of my time setting in the steep, I did put up a silly East slab, and did an interview that my wife describes as the most autistic interview she’s seen.

Please enjoy me being unhinged. And check out Castle. It’s pretty dope.

Short trip, but perfect sunny December days romping through Red Rock, wiggling up things that used to scare me too much to try.

Still was scared, if I’m honest. But I wiggled nonetheless, and got to sit on a big rock. And isn’t that what life’s about? Plus, I’ve got a pretty pebble to come back to with more pads…

A few things are happening, all at once…

I’m healing from burnout. We’ve all been there, no need to expand.

I’ve been climbing commercial sets again for fun. For a while I’ve gone straight to the boards…or outside.

And I’ve been enjoying more play in my own setting again. I’m training and having fun, which helps infuse my work with a sense of exploration.

Where do you find your play?
