The pain of losing a bestfriend is too profound to express, instead I want to honour Mayuri by sharing a recent core memory.

This May, I was fortunate to spend ten glorious days with Mayuri. After nearly seven years, I was finally returning to Bombay, and for the first time since our hostel days in 2015, we would live together again. Mayuri had moved into her own apartment last November, and, in just a few months, transformed an unfurnished flat into a warm, inviting home - a true reflection of her essence.

We often spoke of living together in our own space some day, and since I had work in Bombay this year, this felt like the perfect opportunity.

Mayuri wondered what it would be like to live together again - would it be the same as hostel? Would it be better? Would it be hard to say goodbye again?

I was just excited to live with my bestfriend again and that too in a manifested space of her own. No curfew? No one telling us what to do? Living with Mayo in her home and with this kind of freedom - sounded like a dream!

And it was better than I imagined!

Every morning, Mayuri would wake up and quickly get ready for work. On some days, I'd try to wake her up and she'd mumble, "5 more mins" as her ten alarms continued ringing. Those "5 more mins" took me back to hostel days as I'd try to wake her up for class each day. Back then, even with our dorm one floor above the classroom, we still managed to show up late. Non-fashionably with our slippers and care-free dressing.

The best part about living together was the routine.

We started each day with breakfast, no matter how brief. Sometimes it was an egg in a basket, other times a light sandwich or fruit. One morning, she made the cheesiest sandwich—it was the highlight of my day. I’d pack her tiffin while she booked an Uber, and then she’d dart out the door with a quick hug goodbye.

We went about our day, texting in between, tracking the number of hours till we meet again. She’d check in to make sure I’d eaten, that my plans were going well, and that I was okay.

I've come to believe the measure of a good life lies in the number of lives you touch. Meeting Mayuri's loved ones in Bombay reaffirmed how deeply she was cared for and how widely her love reached.

Today marks one year since Mayuri set off on her journey into the universe, and yet 365 days later, we still feel her omnipresence love. Even in her absence, Mayuri connects people, comforts hearts, nudges laughter, and reminds us of what truly matters.
