@presidenciard @saludpublicard @snsrdo @senadord @diputadosrd

It (only) took me almost a month to finish this painting. I was supposed to paint it in May before LAM Awareness Month, but life got in my way and after getting a pulmonary infection in April, I’m still recovering and have been on 24/7 supplemental oxygen and mandatory rest, making it hard to make anything. Thank you to my sister/carer @valetos because these months have been difficult for her too and to my long-distance doctor @lenina16.
Anyway, June is Worldwide LAM Awareness Month, and this August marks 20 years since my diagnosis. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare progressive lung disease affecting primarily women. It involves abnormal growth of smooth muscle cells and can cause symptoms like fatigue, chest pain ⁣(pleurisy), chronic cough, benign kidney tumours (angiomyolipomas), lung collapse (pneumothorax), shortness of breath (dyspnea), accumulation of fluid called chyle, in the chest cavity or abdomen ⁣(pleural effusion or chylothorax and angioleiomyomas). LAM Awareness Month aims to educate about the disease, raise funds to support patients, and inspire advancements in therapies.
In my 20 years living with LAM, I’ve faced many challenges, I tire easily when walking and often need to take breaks to catch my breath. Climbing stairs, hills, and ramps is particularly challenging. My shortness of breath worsens in extreme cold and hot weather, and carrying heavy objects can leave me breathless. Even bending over and showering can trigger shortness of breath. I’ve experienced chylothorax, which led to my diagnosis, and have had four pneumothoraxes, five chest tubes inserted, two paracenteses, two thoracenteses, a pleurodesis, and a biopsy of cysts in the retroperitoneum (which was how I was ultimately diagnosed).
I hope that by sharing a bit of my experience, I can help you understand this disease better. For more information on LAM, please visit www.thelamfoundation.org and consider sharing this post to raise awareness for Worldwide LAM Awareness Month. @thelamfoundation. #wwlam #wwlam25 #thelamfoundation #lungdisease #raredisease #lammie #hopeisthethingwithfeathers #emilydickinson #frenchygv #frenchygvart

Today, February 28th, we observe Rare Disease Day, a global movement advocating for equity in social opportunities, healthcare, and access to treatments for those living with rare diseases. This day is celebrated on the last day of February, the rarest month. We call for action to ensure that individuals with rare diseases can fully participate in family, work, and social life. The long-term goal of Rare Disease Day is to achieve greater equity for the over 300 million people worldwide affected by rare diseases. To do this, we must advocate for fair access to diagnosis, treatment, and care, as well as comprehensive support for their everyday needs. The UN 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a vital framework for addressing the needs of this population. Countries can integrate rare diseases into their Universal Health Care (UHC) models and approaches (those which have it). It is possible to make great progress at a rapid pace even if starting from very little. Governments can focus on 1) extending coverage to people living with a rare diseases by promoting visibility, codification and diagnosis; 2) Including other services and adapting existing ones to the needs of the rare disease population; and 3) Protecting the rare disease population from further financial hardship.

June has been designated Worldwide LAM Awareness Month (WWLAM) by the Worldwide LAM Patient Coalition. WWLAM brings together the global community in a collaborative effort to educate the world about the signs and symptoms of LAM, raise funds to support women living with LAM and share our global achievements to inspire researchers and clinicians to optimize therapies and find a cure for LAM. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (lim-FAN-je-o-LI-o-MI-o-ma-TO-sis), or LAM, is a rare and progressive lung disease that affects women almost exclusively and has no known cure. LAM is characterized by an abnormal growth of smooth muscle cells, especially in the lungs, lymphatic system, and kidneys. Abnormal growth of these cells can lead to loss of lung function, accumulation of lymph-rich fluid in the chest and abdomen, and growth of benign kidney tumours. When you breathe, oxygen passes through the airways to tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, where oxygen transfers into the blood through tiny blood vessels called capillaries. The LAM cells (abnormal smooth muscle cells) cause blockage of the small airways and damage the lung tissue, reducing airflow and oxygen absorption in the blood. Scientists are working to understand the mechanisms at work in the lung that cause the formation of cysts and lung destruction.
It is estimated that for every million women, three to seven will have LAM. However, a 2023 study of four European countries suggests the prevalence is at least 21 cases per million women– substantially higher than prior estimates. All races are affected, and women with LAM have been identified in more than sixty countries. The average age of women at the time of diagnosis is approximately 35 years old. Most women with LAM have had symptoms for several years before ultimately being diagnosed.
To learn more about LAM and to donate, visit @thelamfoundation. You can also help spread awareness by sharing this post. Thank you.

Today is Rare Disease Day and if you didn’t know I suffer from a rare pulmonary disease called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) which has been a physical, emotional, and financial challenge for me and my family, and that’s why I am passionate about advocating for awareness about rare diseases. Rare Disease Day is the official international awareness-raising campaign for rare diseases, observed annually on the last day of February. The primary goal of this campaign is to increase awareness among the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their influence on the lives of families living with these conditions. On Rare Disease Day we call for action for people living with a rare disease to have equal opportunities to realise their full participation in family, work and social life. The long-term goal of Rare Disease Day over the next decade is increased equity for people living with a rare disease and their families. We join hands across borders and amidst the 6000+ rare diseases to advocate for equitable access to diagnosis, treatment, care, and social opportunities. In order to achieve equitable social inclusion for people living with a rare disease, they must first have access to holistic care covering the 360° spectrum of health, social and everyday needs as argued in a EURORDIS position paper on Achieving Holistic Person-Centred Care to Leave No One Behind. Governments can focus on 1) extending coverage to people living with a rare diseases by promoting visibility, codification and diagnosis; 2) Including other services and adapting existing ones to the needs of the rare disease population; and 3) Protecting the rare disease population from further financial hardship.

These are my favorite books of 2023 in no particular order. I love them all and highly recommended them. 📚 ♥️ #2023favoritebooks #frenchygvart

- After that Night by Karin Slaughter.
- The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman.
- The Guncle by Steven Rowley.
- Weyward by Emilia Hart.
- The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer.
- The Celebrants by Steven Rowley.
- Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt.
- The Grace of Wild Things by Heather Fawcett.
- How Winston Delivered Christmas by Alex T. Smith.

It was my first time reading Steven Rowley and both books of his I read made it into the list so he may become a new fave author; two books were the latest installments of two of my fave mystery/thriller series; one included the point of view of an octopus (who was actually my fave character); two are “children’s books”; and at least four revolve around the theme of grief, about which I’ve found I enjoy reading.
