Dear Darkening Ground
Franciska Eliassen
Opening: Thursday, February 26 2026, 19:30–22:00 Hours: Fri 20:00–22:00; Sat 14:00–21:00 & Sun 14:00-17:00 Location: Seilduken 2, Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo

Dear darkening ground,
you’ve endured so patiently the walls we’ve built;
perhaps you’ll give the cities one more hour

and grant the churches and cloisters two.
And those who labor—let their work
grip them another five hours, or seven

before you become forest again,
and widening wilderness
in that hour of inconceivable terror
when you take back your name
from all things.

Just give me a little more time!
I want to love the things
as no one has thought to love them,
until they’re real and ripe and worthy of you.

— Rainer Maria Rilke, The Book of Hours l 61, Translated by Joanna Macy

Bio: Franciska Eliassen (b. 1997) addresses ecofeminism, geopolitics, activism, and human–nature relations in her practice. She holds a BA from Nordland School of Art and Film, combined with studies in philosophy at the University of Oslo. Her feature film Den siste våren received widespread international recognition, including prices at the Locarno Film Festival and the Amanda Awards. Franciska was awarded the Nordic Film Prize in 2024. Her short films Søster and Blue Borders – A Letter from Moria premiered at Høstutstillingen in 2019. Another notable work is a hut made of soil and driftwood that she built in the mountains. She lived there for one and a half years, before opening it to the public.

Dear Darkening Ground is Franciska’s MFA graduation show where relationships between the underworld, soil, myths and the subconscious are explored through sound, sculpture, textile and video.

Inspired by traditional Norwegian sod huts, independent filmmaker Franciska Eliassen carved a quiet life into a hillside in Northern Norway—using driftwood, discarded planks, secondhand windows, and a $10 stove to stay warm through Arctic winters.

🏠❄️🌱⛄️

After months living in a tent, foraging berries, and following the land, she built her own "gamme": insulated by earth, protected from wind, open to sun. Inside, she could walk barefoot while snow piled up outside. On the roof, herbs and berries grew—and even an apple tree bore fruit at this northern latitude.

For a year and a half, the hut became her world: skating on frozen lakes, bathing in snow, watching the Northern Lights arc overhead. A home that stood for freedom, resilience, and living lightly on the planet.

Today, Franciska travels the world by sailboat and thumb, but the "gamme" remains her true home. Proof that shelter doesn’t have to cost much—only time, care, and attention to place.

Visning tirsdag 19.08 18:30 / Med samtale

"The film that you have been waiting for without knowing it, which, precisely in its hopelessness, gives you hope, not that everything will be all right again in the end, but at least that you are not completely alone on the way there. "
-Filmexplorer

"Sensually precise expression of a vanishing world that is crying out for help. A feeling we can hardly shake off, even after the images on the screen have long faded."

"Films that understand you as a viewer and as a human being are so rare… Den siste våren is one such film"
-Nordishe Filmtage

"Livsglede og livsangst blandes i et av de sterkeste portrettene av et ungt menneske som er laget her i landet."
- Rushprint, Gunnar Iversen" taken in VEGA SCENE by @franciskase

but over the past few weeks, thousands of butterflies have twisted free from their chrysalises. 237 of them found their way out through my window. Here, the newly emerged small tortoiseshells left behind their red meconium drops, which will soon harden into words. Words that will find one another in a poem, this year written by Franciska Eliassen @franciskase

🩸❤️🩸

Aglais Urticae is a long-term book project involving multiple authors, artists, and species. The book or poetry collection revolves around the life cycle of the butterfly NĂŚldens takvinge (Aglais urticae), which the book is materially dependent on.

When a butterfly has just emerged from its pupa, it excretes a red drop called meconium. Every year, I collect some of these drops for this project. These meconium drops are then transformed into ink to write poems with. Each year, a new artist or poet is chosen to create a poem or text-based work using ink made in the current year.

The poetry collection will conclude in 2030 and is curated and organized by @sarah.sikorie by @franciskase

Just looking at these photos makes my heart all wobbly. It’s impossible to convey this island’s strange and intense beauty - the light, the colors, the smells, the art and the architecture, the music, the dance, the lifelines in contrast to the empty highways, the inflation, the queues, the food rations, the pizza, the hole that is left by the young people fleeing, the economy collapsing, the lack of freedom of speech and the US putting Cuba on the list of countries that support terrorism and by doing so continuing the long history of bullying…

A place unlike any other we have been.

It was an honor to have a screening of my film under the open night sky of Havanna, a year after it was invited by the Norwegian Ambassy. Thank you 🙏 by @franciskase

Hitchhiking boats from island to island. Eight different vessels, eight floating universes. Thank you for opening your homes and hearts❤️

🖊They invite us over. The breakfast at their boat turns into dinner as the sun sets behind the mountains of Dominica. We’re all quite satisfied with having done nothing that day.

Our seven hours conversation circles around time and death. The metal-loving, fully tattooed mathematics teacher and the saleswoman were watching their friends burn out. Hitting his head in a system were “the students were the smallest problem”, a realization crept in and was emphasized when several of the students parents suddenly died of cancer. They decided to sell what they could and buy a boat. Smaller space and less material comfort, but closer to the elements and more alive.

The last months while listening to the stories of the sailors and cruisers, a scene from the movie “Nomadland” keeps hunting me: Fern, a woman who has lost everything, including her husband and her house, sets off in her car. Between low-income jobs for survival, she meets other modern day nomads (played by real life nomads) failed by corporate US, in the deserts of the West.
Around the fire, fellow nomad Merle tells about a friend working all his life only to die three days after his retirement. “…having never been able to take that sailboat that he bought out of his driveway. And he missed out on everything. Then he told me before he died, just don’t waste any time. Don’t waste any time. I didn’t want my sailboat to be in the driveway when I died. “ by @franciskase

Tenting through the Caribbean

Traveling this way, so slowly, makes the world seem a little bit more round. The relations between place, people, present and past are constantly revealing our interconnectedness.

As we crossed the Atlantic, we came to understand that the American continent is not that far away. As we took our first shaky steps on solid ground in Barbados, we realized that our collective past is not that far away either. We knew colonization is an ongoing struggle. But the level of paradoxes in this lush green paradise…

The luxury resorts alongside hurricane ridden shelters, (and this was before the one this summer) the gentrification, the crazy prices, learning that cruise ships come to fill up with water - at times leaving the islands inhabitants without water for days. And then suddenly being in a tropical Europe, amongst huge shopping malls, french flags and bakeries everywhere, as Martinique and Guadeloupe still belong to France…

But also, and even more so, we’re marked by the beauty of these islands, the new friendships, the sunsets, the fireflies, the corals, the jungle, the volcanos, the tropical fruits and flowers, the music and the relaxed vibes of the people.

Learning from the master Lara, the Art director who turned her back to the fashion industry, and together with Richard moved in to a roofless old ruin in the forest with a two year old and a growing baby belly to build up, regenerate and spread her creative energy through every cell of this place.
Since then, Can Bosc has been hosting permaculture courses and woofers from around the world for the last three decades.

PS: Four hours of work - foods and accommodation covered. That’s the deal through WOOFING (world wide organic organization for farms) where you can find a farm anywhere in the world to stay and learn at. (Almost sounds sponsored, but it’s just my own nature loving propaganda.) Finding ways to live with nature in a beautiful way, regenerate land and soil is one of the most precious gifts as well as it is one of the most important urgencies of our times. Lucky are we who can be a part of it. by @franciskase

A note from last fall: Two months in Spain with hands in the soil, planting, harvesting, listening, learning and carefully taking this poetic fireball of a language in my mouth for the first time❤️‍🔥

Falling even more in love with the natural world.

Crying over the harm we bring upon it and ourself as extreme weather kills in the south and floods the north.

Crying of joy as the first rain falls over the little paradise Can Bosc, where the crops died this summer due to drought, where they used to pump ground water but no longer can, where everybody talks about how it’s getting dryer every year.

The wild bores can no longer drink from what used to be a stream and sneak up to the neighbor’s cattle farm to steal some.

One evening we walk back home through the dark woods after dancing in the village, with the moon and the Pyrenees in our neck. As we pass through the many rows of calfs isolated from their mums in each their own tiny box, we see two cows standing close in a perfect little spotlight. As we walk closer, well hidden in the dark, we see that they are somewhat cuddling each other carefully, for a long time, before returning to the others in barn. Just this little scene.
We keep on walking, keep on falling through the universe as is felt when wandering under the stars without torch, far from city lights.

Next morning we will wake up to the sound of snoring bores, rise with the sun, which quickly evoke a symphony of birds that just arrived from the north, two roosters, the dog, and a neighbor feeding his twenty wild cats. Yoga, reading for each other, picking the day’s first pomegranate for breakfast, (I didn’t know they explode (!) when they’re ripe before coming here) and then work awaits us.
