What became of the captives?
Some ended up in the markets of North African cities, while others were taken to palaces and private homes.
In the Morocco of Sultan Moulay Ismail, for instance, there was a very large population of slaves from diverse origins.
Some captives lived in Morocco for so long that those seized in childhood spent virtually their entire adult lives there. Some Europeans captured in North Africa converted to Islam in an attempt to improve their circumstances. At the beginning of the 19th century, the United States and Britain joined forces to combat these pirates and prevent them from capturing white people and enslaving them. In 1904, European nations signed an international cooperation agreement in Paris to fight the phenomenon of the white slave trade.

As it turns out, slavery was not a one-way system.
For centuries, the Trans-Saharan and Indian Ocean trades transported vast numbers of enslaved Africans, while the Atlantic trade brought millions of Africans into slavery in the Americas. Added to this were other systems of captivity and enslavement, including the enslavement of Europeans in North Africa.
There is no need here to compare tragedies or create a "competition" between different forms of slavery. The simpler historical point is that slavery was a global system of power, money, and warfare—it was not confined to a single continent.
History, as always, is more complex than what we are taught.

White Slavery:
The Christian European Slaves of Islam in Africa
.
When discussing the history of global slavery, it is easy to picture primarily slaves from sub-Saharan Africa. Yet, for centuries, a different, lesser-known form of slavery also existed: Christian Europeans captured by North African corsairs (pirates) and sold into bondage.

From the 16th century through the early 19th century, corsairs operating along the North African coast—primarily from Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and Morocco—raided ships and settlements along the European coastline. They reached Italy, Spain, France, the British Isles, and even further afield.

They captured men, women, and children; some were sold into labor—working in construction, agriculture, mines, or on ships—while women served as domestic servants and concubines. Captives of particular value were held in the hope that their families would pay a ransom for their release.

One of the most remarkable raids occurred in 1627, when North African corsairs reached Iceland, attacked coastal settlements, and took hundreds of people captive.
Four years later, in 1631, the village of Baltimore in southern Ireland was attacked. A great number of people were seized and transported to North Africa.

For coastal towns, the threat of capture was so palpable that watchtowers and warning systems were established to spot approaching corsair ships.

How many Europeans were taken captive?
American historian Robert C. Davis, in his book *Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500–1800*, estimated that between one million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured and enslaved in North Africa between 1500 and 1800. This estimate encompasses people from regions ranging from France and Italy to Spain, the Netherlands, Britain, and even Iceland.
Men, women, and children were captured in raids so devastating that a vast number of European coastal towns were abandoned.
