Mazatlán wasn’t originally in our ship’s itinerary, but hurricane Rachel changed our plans. And while we are bummed that we couldn’t dive, there’s a silver lining: we were able to go to the Museo Nacional de la Ballena (MUNBA). It’s an awesome museum about cetaceans. It includes exhibits of bones of current whale species, as well as fossils from extinct ones; games and activities with cutting-edge technology that teaches about the biology and ecology of marine mammals; and many more exhibits.
I am happy that I could share this with my cutie @brianvaljensen
Thank you, @oscarguzon for the invitation. I hope this project continues to grow and inspire people to love the ocean!

21-23 of August was a great weekend for @brianvaljensen . We did scuba diving in a kelp forest south of Ensenada, something I was very excited because kelp forests have gradually disappeared ever since I started scuba diving (and it was Brian’s first official certified dive). We saw lots of marine creatures, including our first wild giant sea bass, which is a critically endangered species.
On Sunday we went to the paellas competition in the valley of Guadalupe, a tradition in my family. My parents and their team, “Las Castañuelas” have been participating ever since I was a child, and they make a delicious paella.
Thanks @bajabluediver and @brianvaljensen 💙🧜🏻‍♂️

La Brea Tar Pits. Los Angeles.
Fun day at the paleontology museum in the middle of Los Ángeles. Over a million fossils have been found in the asphalt ponds in the area, including extinct animals like mammoths, giant sloths, sabre-tooth cats, and more.
Thank you for the experience @brianvaljensen 😘

Great Barrier Reef, 11/12/2025
On our second day of diving, @brianvaljensen ♥️ and I took a tour to Hardy Reef with @reefsafari
The reef consists of lagoons with corals growing at the top of wide, shallow plateaus, before sinking into deeper waters that are exposed to strong currents, which is where we dived.
Compared to our previous location, Hardy Reef shows more signs of environmental impact, with coral rubble littering the floor and signs of bleaching. However, the depth at which we dived and the murky conditions might have made it look gloomier than it was, for the most part it looks like a healthy, part of the Great Barrier Reef. And we saw cool marine life like the huge humphead wrass (Cheilinus undulatus), schools of predatory giant trevallies (Caranx ignobilis) sweet lips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides), tropical fish, and even a cuttlefish (my first ever!).
I’m truly fortunate to have been in one of the most beautiful places in the planet.

Moore Reef, Queensland, Australia.
When I think of Australia the first thing that comes to mind is the Great Barrier Reef. Located in the northeast of Australia, it spreads up to 2300 km (1,400 miles) long and covers 340,000 sq km (130,000 sq miles) of extension, making it the largest coral reef in the world, and its even visible from space! Its diversity of coral and other invertebrate species is astounding, and it holds over 1500 species of fish, among other sea animals. Naturally, me and @brianvaljensen had to dive in it on our visit to Australia.
Our first experience was in Moore Reef 🪸, with the company Reef Magic @reefmagiccairns , and I have to say this is probably the most beautiful coral reef I’ve ever seen: it looks like coral reefs depicted in the media, or how many coral reefs around the world probably looked before climate change and human impact degraded them. Moore Reef is vibrant with colour and with corals, sponges and sea anemones grow into a thick infrastructure that dwarfs you as you swim through it.
We also happened to dive in after the night of the corals spawning: a few nights a year during the full moon, corals release their sperm and eggs into the water, forming a mist that reaches the surface. The scientists of GBR biology on the pontoon collected some of the gametes from the previous as part of their project of coral gardening, and they showed us the samples in the lab!
As for the reef inhabitants, we saw the huge humphehead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) that measured over 1.5 m long (and they can grow up to 2 m long!); a gray reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), clownfish or the real Nemos (Amphiprion ocellaris), giant clams (Tridacna gigas) (and they are called giant for a reason), and much more.
It was a spectacular day and I am so glad to have shared this long-awaited adventure with Brian Jensen, who himself did his first scuba dive experience ever (proud of you!).
I appreciate the work that scientists @gbrbiology , the government and other groups are doing to preserve such a beautiful place.

If you visit the port of Darwin in Australia, I recommend you go to the aquarium and herpetarian Crocosaurus. That you can see and learn about many of the reptile species that live in Australia.
But the highlight of my visit was going with @brianvaljensen into the “Cage of death” to see the saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) up close. These are the largest species of crocodiles in the world, as the males can reach up to 6 m long and weigh over one metric ton. They live in the Indo-Pacific coasts, from the Malaysian peninsula to the north of Australia. There are known for being incredible hunters and with amazing biological adaptations.
because of the risk they impose, the relationship with humans has been tricky. I was glad to learn that Crocosaurus and to other Australian institutions participate in different programs to study and protect this amazing species.
Thank you, Brian, for joining me in this one in a lifetime experience!

Bali, Indonesia.
Indonesia is a large archipelago-country that I have yet to see most of it. But I can say this: the island of Bali is beautiful.
It’s become a popular destination for worldwide visitors due to its landscapes, friendly people and the local religion Balinese Hinduism, which is a mixture of Hinduism, Buddhism and other local indigenous religions, making it an exception to the rest of the Muslim country.
Unlike many monotheistic religions, at its core the Balinese worship the natural world through the worship of different gods and figures, each representing different aspects of the natural world, which I find beautiful even as a non-religious man.
Spiritually aside, @brianvaljensen and I had so much fun. We visited the Tegalalang rice fields and zip lined across it, we hiked some waterfalls, visited the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, the 11th century Batuan Temple 🛕, some local silver crafters and painters; and we tried the Luwa coffee (google it ☕️ 💩).
Bali is a little jewel in the Indo-Pacific.
