ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: FRANK HIFFERNAN

Frank Hiffernan creates hand-forged steel sculptures that move between abstraction and representation, transforming familiar subjects into expressive, larger-than-life forms.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Hiffernan was introduced to drawing, painting, sculpture, and colour theory at an early age through his family’s commercial advertising studio. After initially pursuing studies in biology and medicine, he ultimately returned to art with extraordinary intensity, beginning his professional sculptural practice in 2023 using found metal and materials sourced from his surroundings.

Frank Hiffernan now lives and works from his studio in Iowa, where he creates large-scale and monumental sculpture for public, private, and corporate collections.

I’m happy to have 6 pieces at Oeno Gallery for their 2026 Outdoor Sculpture Garden. It was my first time in Canada, and also my first time showing my flower sculptures. There couldn’t be a more perfect setting than this!

Sculpture #2 for Ottumwa High School! What a great historic building with so many wonderful updates. They teach film photography, and built a massive center for sporting events across the street (connected by the sky bridge). This sculpture is installed right outside the windows to the art class. The most magical day! I attended an event at the Gene Leahy Mall where Peter Millet so generously shared his time to demonstrate his master draftsmanship. We were sketching scenery in the park, and I arrived late due to an installation of a custom mailbox I made for a wonderful art collector. I listened while Peter went one by one with every artist, praising their work and offering his valuable insight. I sat on a rock near the incredible sculpture Peter has installed in the park, and drew the prettiest view I could see; boulders at the foot of lush green foliage. Eager at the opportunity to receive feedback from a world renowned, and incredibly kind artist, he brought me aside and it just so happened that we had drawn the exact same view! To my astonishment, he gifted me his drawing, and I gifted him my drawing in return. Needless to say, I took his drawing straight to the frame shop! Peter, I am proud to call you my friend and I look forward to visiting your studio in Washington this summer. Special thank you to @thekaneko for organizing this amazing event, and I encourage all in the Midwest to view his phenomenal exhibition at The Kaneko located at 1111 Jones Street in Omaha, Nebraska. taken in Omaha, Nebraska by @oenogallery
