The exhibition Rock, Paper, Scissors 石头剪刀布 featured the sculptural figures we used in the performances, as well as photographs and short films of the performances.
The residency’s exhibition space is stunning, with very special brickwork and beautiful ornamentation and wood carvings. Our performance Carry That Weight inspired us to start making rocks ourselves, and we created more than forty blue and yellow stones and rocks, that are both props and sculptures. The exhibition thus became an otherworldly theatrical landscape, in which the surrealist figures crossed the boundary between exhibition - and public space.#performanceart

During an event staged by “Good Trouble”, two one-armed green figures, with green hats over their faces, appeared in front of the “IJzerstaven” in Amsterdam. From their insides, they produced a long series of quotes and one-liners about art and what art can do in the world. The texts were presented to the visitors, some were accepted as gifts, but many were simply dumped on the ground. The two figures do not see what is going on around them and handing out items is their only means of communication. A performance about good intentions, interaction and what art could be. Duration: 30 minutes

ECHO HEAD, a performance by Guda Koster & Frans van Tartwijk
A Figure with a vase-like form for a head moved through the exhibition space during the opening of “Rock, Paper, Scissors“ at West 97 Art Community in Fulin Village, China.The head was covered with a strange synthetic fabric that reflected the light in a surprising way. Whenever it bent over slightly visitors could look into the “vase”, only to see themselves reflected in the inside of the object. #echohead #performinghtebody #performanceart #mirrorwork #artoftheday🎨 by @fransvantartwijk

Carry that Weight!
It is quite remarkable that in Fulin Village pieces of rock -once used to build houses and temples-lie around in many of the small alleys and houses. For us -coming from a country with no mountains or rocks- this abundance of stone was very special.
A figure in a bright yellow suit, with a yellow stone head, carried a huge, self-made, yellow stone through the village. Its bright color contrasted with the reddish brown and grey of the surroundings, creating a surreal appearance that brings to mind traditional Chinese clothing and rituals, but also refers to trends in contemporary fashion. Ticker
A figure made from a cloth with a brick pattern walked calmly through the streets and over the local market of Fulin Village, blending with the red bricks of the local houses. On its outsized head there were 7 clocks, indicating both Chinese and Central European time. It walked to the soundtrack of a ticking, clock-like, sound. It kept going until the ticking stopped, and then froze in its steps. After a short while the ticking started again, and the figure walked off again.

A Sign Made by Walking
行走的痕迹

地书 (ground calligraphy) is the art of using water to draw chinese characters on the pavement. In the hot sun, the signs that are drawn remain visible only briefly.
This work was based on the same principle. We used all the water bottles we bought during our stay in Fulin Village to create a pink and blue figure with a water-bottle head. It carried two 10 liter bottles where water came dripping out. It kept walking on the same piece of pavement until the water ran out, creating a simple drawing: the number 8, or, when seen from a different angle; the mathematical sign symbolizing infinity. Afterwards the sign evaporated quickly. Duration: 40 minutes. Fulin village, Fujian, China by @fransvantartwijk

Since July 1st we have worked at the West 97 Art Community in Fulin, a beautiful and historic village close to Quanzhou, China. Still two weeks to go till the opening of our exhibition. We are working on new performances with sculptural figures inspired by this remarkable place.

Our Exhibition Rock, Paper, Scissors will open on Saturday August 22. The exhibition will feature short films of performances in Fulin, sculptures, photographs and many rocks ..
