Understory is an artistic research project by Jacqueline Kärcher @jackstarockintheair and Florentine Schäfermeier @frecheflosse and Martha Steinmetz @slightliest
Set along the coast of Tromsø (Romsa), Northern Norway, this exhibition follows community-led kelp forest restoration with RISSA Citizen Science, exploring how analogue photography, digital film, sound and soft materials can narrate the layered experiences of local citizen science. Restoration is approached as more than ecological engineering, becoming a methodology for rethinking relationships between species, environments, knowledge and care.

Screenshots von der Kurzdokumentation “(Ver)sammeln”, die sich mit der Arbeit von HERMINE e.V. auseinander setzt.

Seid fast 10 Jahren schickt HERMINE Hilfsgüter an die europäischen Außengrenzen. Jeden Sonntag versammelt sich das Team um Kleidung zu sortieren, versendet wird diese an Partnerorganisationen und somit an Menschen in verschiedenste Notunterkünften an den Grenzen der EU.
Durch ehrenamtliche Arbeit kann man keine Probleme lösen, aber Symptome bekämpfen. “(Ver)sammeln” beschäftigt sich am Beispiel von HERMINE e.V. mit ehrenamtlicher Arbeit die für viele unsichtbar bleibt. Arbeit die zeigt, dass sich die Lage an den Grenzen nicht verbessert. Arbeit die zeigt, was den Menschen vor Ort fehlt. Arbeit für die die Politik in den letzten 10 Jahren keine nachhaltigen Lösungen gefunden hat. Aufgenommen vor der Wahl am 23.02.2025 bei der das Wort “Migration” den Wahlkampf beherrscht, ist diese Doku ein Appell daran das Thema Migration wieder mit mehr Menschlichkeit zu betrachten, denn Flucht ist kein Verbrechen.

Leute morgen wählen gehen und vorher gut informieren!

My second graduation project:
exaggerated artificiality

In order to enjoy natural environments, wilderness has been transformed into accessible spaces, blurring the lines between what has been engineered and what is natural. Therefore, further reinforcing the idea of humans as controllers rather than an integral part of the natural world.

“Exaggerated artificiality” translates temporary traces left by a grass seeding machine into a pattern for a woven blanket. The design serves as a reminder of the underlying engineering, visualising the paradox that a certain amount of artificiality is commonly found when wanting to enjoy a natural environment.
The comfort of the blanket draws an analogy to the comfort, accessibility and safety created through engineering landscapes for relaxation purpose.
As a produced object resulting from design and engineering, the blanket itself performatively transforms the landscape.
By choosing to translate the traces in the gras through weaving machinery into an object of comfort the project, ironically critiques the technologist nature, while being a technologist object.

In horse riding, a ‘school horse’ is often the first animal ridden by young people who want to make their equine dreams a reality. ‘Ushi’ is a school horse, who happens to be the eponymous cover star and central protagonist of a new magazine for kids. Ushi sheds light on the stark differences between the real life of horses and the horse girl dream world. The magazine is therefore told from the animal’s own perspective, with images printed in the spectrum of colours that can be seen by a horse’s eye. Featuring interviews with experts, horse vlogs and even a free stable-scented perfume, Ushi subverts a familiar format to act as a gentle educational and reflective tool for young horse enthusiasts.

The fragrance is made by scent designer @louise.Francoise.mathilde by @frecheflosse
