Brian‘s been gone for over 3 wks and I still can’t find a way to sum up over 30 yrs of friendship, fam holidays, seeing (and playing) music, walking MUNI tunnels, having the times of our lives. So I will just speak to this first pic, circa 1997. Though I met Brian briefly back in high school through fortuitous circumstances (I lived in Vegas and would drive with friends to visit a buddy in LA who then introduced us) it wasn’t until we both ended up in SF for art schools that we grew so close. This photo is from my first night out in SF with Brian. He invited me up to the Headlands as he wanted to photograph Hale-Bopp, a spectacularly bright comet that could easily be seen with the naked eye. It hadn’t been around in 4200 years and wouldn’t be again for two-thousand more.Thinking back I can’t ignore the similarities.Much like this particular comet, Brian absolutely beamed with character. You didn’t need a telescope or more than a moment to spot it, either. He always put himself fully out there. And I always admired that.Just as Hale-Bopp had twin tails, he had two distinct sides. One an outgoing blaze of a being, radiant with positivity and creativity. And another that was tender and deep; he could talk about art history, music, and especially Alice & Owen, with such depth and sincerity that he just sparkled.And just like this celestial body, we earthlings won’t see anything like him for thousands of years. While the @gorillaz House of Kong exhibit didn’t allow pics on the inside, we scored a few on the edges and were thoroughly impressed in-between. The ‘50’ in this pic of my Dad at USMC Basic Training was already feeling prescient on Veterans Day with my newfound fiftyhood.
