Story time; For those who don’t know the meaning, the history and origins of this gesture 🤙🏻🤙🏽🤙🏾 called “Shaka”

Shaka, is a gesture of friendly intent that expresses gratitude and is a greeting in the local Hawaiian community, then spread to the surfing community and around the world

In the early 1900s, Hamana Kalili, a sugar factory worker in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii, lost all three fingers, the index, middle, and ring fingers in the right hand in an accident at work

Later, he became a guard patrolling sugarcane trains. He began using his hand without three fingers to wave, and local children imitated it. It gradually became a popular greeting in the community due to it’s uniqueness, as well as a sign of admiration for this man

In Hawaiian culture, the Shaka represents the spirit of aloha, friendship, and goodwill. It was soon adopted by surfers, who saw the gesture as a reflection of the values of solidarity and respect for the sea and for others
