The Code Monsters are spreading!

Our DARKMODE pilot script, FEAR OF MISSING OUT, is an Official Selection of the @austinhorrorfilmfest .

ICYMI! DARKMODE is a horror anthology series I co-wrote with John Squires aka @freddyinspace . Tales from the Crypt meets Black Mirror. We wrote six scripts about Code Monsters, digital entities born from humanity’s negative online energy. A new generation of monsters for a new generation.

FEAR OF MISSING OUT is where it starts.

A smartphone-addicted family’s attempt to resurrect their dead son through an internet challenge backfires when a “DeepFake” invades their home, forcing them to battle this manifestation of their grief before it consumes them.

This script just won Honorable Mention at @genreblast for Best TV/Webisode Script.

That’s two festivals now saying yes to a series that we developed for three years.

HUGE THANKS to the Austin Horror Film Festival for the selection!

All six scripts are available to anyone in the industry who wants a look.

I had so much fun at @genreblast 2026.

The DARKMODE pilot I co-wrote with John Squires aka @freddyinspace won Honorable Mention!

Got to meet my @scriptbutcher client @mcnulty_ryan Ryan McNulty. His work TEETHBURGER was performed live at the fest and took Runner Up for Best Feature Script. Congrats, Ryan!

Watched a ton of wild movies.

Saw one filmmaker propose to another.

Made new friends. Caught up with old ones.

Welcoming. Encouraging. Inspiring.

Filmmaker Josh Stifter said it best: “Tons of weirdos just stoked to see weird stuff.”

Huge thanks to @loogenhausen , Chad Farmer, @raygan_omics , @bryan.the.nuri.1138 and the rest of the GenreBlast team.

ICYMI!

In 2022 I asked my friend John Squires aka @freddyinspace to write a horror anthology series with me. Tales from the Crypt meets Black Mirror.

Three years of Thursday night development and writing sessions later, we had DARKMODE. Six original scripts. Five 30-minute episodes and one feature length finale.  DARKMODE is about monsters unleashed from the darkest depths of the internet. We call them Code Monsters, digital entities born from humanity’s negative online energy. The goal was to create a new generation of monsters for a new generation.

It all builds to ENCRYPTIDS, a creature crossover feature finale.

We submitted two of the six to @genreblast . Both are finalists. The pilot for Best TV/Webisode Script and ENCRYPTIDS for Best Feature Script. We also picked up a Nuclear Pen Award for landing two scripts in the finals.

AS A BONUS! My @scriptbutcher client Ryan McNulty @mcnulty_ryan is a finalist in the same feature category with TEETHBURGER. First time I’ve had my own work in a fest next to a script I consulted on. GenreBlast is doing a table read of a scene from his script. SO COOL!

Headed to the fest Friday. Come say hi. I will too!

In 2022, I reached out to my friend John Squires and asked if he wanted to write a horror anthology series with me. Think Tales from the Crypt meets Black Mirror.

It’s an ambitious project. And I knew John was the perfect person to write it with me.

I warned him it would take YEARS and that we’d be doing it backwards. Normally you pitch and sell a pilot, then a writer’s room gets hired to script the rest. John joined me on this quest anyway, and we became our own writer’s room.

For three years we had writing homework. We met remotely every Thursday night to workshop each other’s pages.

Together we developed the project, ultimately scripting the entire series.

After three years, we had a six episode original series called DARKMODE on our hands. Five 30-minute episodes and one feature length finale.

I haven’t submitted my writing anywhere in nearly a decade, so I was hesitant to put myself out there again. I decided to submit our pilot episode and feature finale script to GenreBlast. I’ve attended the fest twice as a spectator, and even without having any films in the fest, it was so much fun.

I’m proud to say BOTH scripts are finalists in the competition. Our pilot is up for Best TV/Webisode Script and our feature finale is up for Best Feature Script.

We also won a Nuclear Pen Award for having two scripts in the finals!?!?!

Of course, our hope is that DARKMODE someday comes to life as a real flesh and blood series, but we’re already feeling like our hard work has paid off.

In 2022, my friend/screenwriter Jimmy George approached me about writing a horror series.

It was an ambitious project with an excellent concept, and I jumped at the opportunity.

For three years, he taught me the craft of screenwriting and we developed the project together, ultimately scripting the entire series in a whirlwind of creative collaboration that finally gave me the confidence to believe I could actually do it.

After three years, we had a six episode original anthology series called DARKMODE on our hands, made up of five 30-minute episodes and one feature length finale.

It was Jimmy's idea to submit two of the scripts to this year's GenreBlast Film Festival, and I am extremely proud to say that BOTH scripts are finalists in the competition, with our pilot up for a TV/Webisode award and our feature finale up for the Feature Script award.

We also won a Nuclear Pen Award for having two scripts in the finals.

Of course, the hope is that DARKMODE someday comes to life as a real flesh and blood series, but at the moment I already feel like the hard work has paid off. And I will forever be grateful to Jimmy for taking the time to teach me, for having the confidence in me, and for holding me to a schedule that forced me to DO THE WORK.

Huge thanks to the GenreBlast judges for deeming our scripts worthy of being finalists. To me, it's already more than enough of a win to be sitting alongside the other finalists who poured their blood, sweat, and tears into their own work.
