My [current] thoughts on touch tolerance and cooperative care:

I won’t claim to be an expert in any part of puppy raising, especially when it comes to handling and grooming. That’s actually the reason I decided to make this post, so if anyone has any additional advice I’m all ears!

I knew going into getting Freddy that touch tolerance was something I wanted to prioritize for so many reasons, having a happy, healthy, well adjusted dog being the most important. What I did not prepare for was how avoidant I would be when the time came to actually follow through with all of the things I had been researching.

I didn’t want to make Freddy uncomfortable or accidentally become someone he feared, and before I knew it I was several weeks in and I had barely done any work to help him feel comfortable with human touch and sensitive spots.

My solution? Wait for him to want to be touched. I realized there was at least one moment each day where Freddy showed me he felt safe, comfortable, and excited to have me petting him. Whether he curls up next to me on his back or nudges my hands to ask for head scratches, I started to use these little invitations as opportunities to work on handling and it’s made a huge difference!

Just start slow, adding in an ear touch every few belly rubs or lightly running your hands over their legs while they greet you. Eventually Freddy started letting me give him little paw rubs, brushing him while he enjoys a lick mat, bringing over a chew and scooting himself back into my lap for more brushing, etc. Obviously he still has sensitive spots he doesn’t love me touching, but he’s starting to associate my touch with relaxation and allowing me to handle him more and more🥹
