I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the 2026 Percussive Arts Society Lifetime Achievement in Education Award.

For nearly fifty years, teaching, sharing, and passing on my passion for music and percussion have been at the heart of my life.

This recognition means a great deal to me, because I have always believed that education is about much more than teaching techniques. It is about inspiring curiosity, developing musical expression, and helping young musicians find their own voices.

My sincere thanks to the Percussive Arts Society and to everyone involved in this recognition.

A very special thank you to @Gordon Stout, who believed in my work and so generously nominated and supported me.
Many thanks to @Nancy Zeltsman, @John H. Beck, @Mark Ford, @Ju Tzong Ching, Lamon Lawhorn and Eric Willie who also supported me.

And, of course, my gratitude goes to all the students, colleagues, and friends around the world who have been part of this wonderful journey.

I look forward to celebrating this special moment at PASIC in Indianapolis on November 12.

And the journey continues! 🄁

Exigence, Technique, Musicalité, Pianiste, Transmission ...
Et vous, quel mot lui associez-vou spontanément ?

Let's continue talking about Jacques Delécluse, in ONE word :
Excellence, Technique, Musicality, Pianist, Transmission...
And you, what word spontaneously comes to mind when you think of him ?

A delightful surprise on French TV last night (France 4): a broadcast of the concert "Pierre Boulez Conducts The Firebird" by the Orchestre de Paris at the Louvre Pyramid in 2008 !
A very fond memory... among many others. It's still available for a few more days on FranceTV Replay.

COMMENT MIEUX JOUER PIANO ? 🄁

TreĢ€s piano meĢ‚me.

HOW TO PLAY PIANO BETTER ?
For years, I've asked my students, and the percussionists I meet in masterclasses or seminars, what they find most difficult about the snare drum.
Over 90% answer: play piano.

But when I ask them how they warm up, most answer: loudly.
Hmm…

Playing loudly is easy, natural. Give drumsticks to a three-year-old: instinctively, they'll play… loudly.

Loud is your comfort zone. Piano isn't.
So try the opposite: warm up piano. Very piano, even. Every day.
You'll see: physically, you'll warm up just as much.
And little by little, your comfort zone will shift… towards the piano, or even extremely softly.

It's worth a try, isn't it?

Don’t pick up your sticks just yet !

Here’s a very simple piece of advice — something that may sound obvious, but that some often forget.

When you start working on a new piece — or even when you come back to a piece you already performed — don’t immediately grab your sticks.
Don’t even go to the instrument.

Just take the score, sit down quietly… and look at it. Read it. Sing it.
Try to understand how it’s built.

Where are the phrases?
Where does the music breathe?
Where is it going?
What are the difficult spots?
And the most important :
how do you imagine it should sound?

Because before you start working on a piece with your hands, you need to have it in your head first.

And only when you know the score, when you understand the piece, and when you have an idea of what you want to do with it…
then pick up your sticks.

At that point, you’re no longer practising at random.
You know what to work on… and why.

Even on vacation: 15 minutes on the pad every day.
Beach, boat, city… the scenery changes, but the habits don’t.
My sticks travel with me.
What about you ? Did you bring your sticks on vacation too ?

For over thirty-five years, I had the immense privilege of sharing an exceptional relationship with Jacques Delécluse.

I was first his student, then we became colleagues in the Orchestre de Paris for many years, and a true friendship naturally developed over time.

We exchanged ideas extensively about music, the snare drum, pedagogy, and teaching.

When I wrote *Snare System*, Jacques, who had personally initiated the project, encouraged and advised me throughout its creation. These exchanges profoundly influenced my life as a musician and teacher.

For over 35 years at the CRR de Paris, and during hundreds of masterclasses and clinics around the world, I had the joy of passing on a part of this legacy.

Today, as the years go by, I realize more and more that I belong to one of the last generations to have had the privilege of working alongside Jacques Delécluse for so long. It now seems essential to me to pass on this experience before it is lost.

It is with this in mind that I will soon launch a series of publications dedicated to Jacques Delécluse: his career, his musical thought, his Études, their interpretation, their teaching… but also some personal memories and perhaps a few unpublished anecdotes.

This project is a continuation of everything that has inspired me for many years, and more recently, the Macarez & Friends project, presented at PASIC 2025, which offers a new musical interpretation of the Twelve Études thanks to original accompaniments composed by Franck Dentresangle.

If you are a percussionist, teacher, or simply passionate about this repertoire, I hope that this series will inspire you to rediscover the work of Jacques Delécluse from a fresh perspective. See you very soon. by @frederic_macarez

Starting in September, I'll be happy to connect with you here two or three times a week to share my passion and experience with percussion. šŸ„šŸŽ¶

We'll be talking a lot about the snare drum, of course: technique, sound, practice tips… but also about Jacques Delécluse's Études, their interpretation, and the best way to approach them.

I'll also share my experience as an orchestral musician, as a solo timpanist and percussionist, with very practical advice for tackling a piece, a challenge, a situation… or simply an instrument.

And then I'll take you along to my masterclasses, clinics, concerts, and festivals, both in France and abroad, along with some travel memories and anecdotes.
That's the program !

See you here starting in September.
Until then, take care, enjoy the end of summer…
and see you very soon !

——

Sometimes it’s necessary to step away from the noise of the world...

To rediscover silence. To listen to the wind, the trees, the light. To breathe.

Nature has this unique power to bring us back to what’s essential.

It’s in these suspended moments that I rediscover the desire to create, to share, to teach, and to pass on my knowledge.

Being a musician isn’t just about practicing your instrument. It’s also about nurturing your vision, your listening skills, and your sensitivity.

Every moment spent in nature becomes a source of inspiration that then informs each of my concerts, each of my compositions, my masterclasses, and my encounters.

Reconnecting with oneself... to better connect with others.
Keep moving forward. Keep sharing.
✨
Because the most beautiful music is often born from silence.

Vacation doesn’t stop the practicing ! šŸ„ā˜€ļø Single, double, paradiddle, flams, roughs … the routine continues, even in the sun.

No need for long sessions—just a little consistency each day to keep your hands in shape and your head in the music.
15 minutes every day is way better than 3 hours once a month!

I never forget my routine, no matter where I am !
And you, do you take your drum machine on vacation? Tell me all about it in the comments! šŸ‘‡
