Dear Hank,

In the year of Beyoncé 1998, I graduated 5th grade and moved on to middle school. At our culmination ceremony we as a class sang Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of You Life)”. I bring this up because just days after your 11th birthday, your class sang the same song at your elementary school culmination. I’m not sure if that means anything besides that song is awesome, but I cried nonetheless.

It’s worth mentioning that you MC’d the graduation as part of your duties as Class President, which is an objectively awesome thing to get to say. I am so unbelievably proud of you. Everyday you show me something new that you can do or feel or comprehend.

You started hockey recently. Your first time stepping on the rink in your full gear you immediately ate shit and hit the ice. And, you smiled over at me and Dada and got right up. In the few months since then, you’ve changed on skates and off. You are more confident, more athletic and still clumsy like me off the ice. I couldn’t be prouder.

Accomplishments and accolades aside, you as a person inspire and awe me.

I say it every year, but my love for you has grown and stretched. It has to, with the rate you’ve grown in just the past year. This time next year I suspect you’ll be closing in on your dad, height wise, which is terrifying and extremely exciting.

Right before we found out if you were a girl or a boy early in my pregnancy, I heard the song “Beautiful Boy” by John Lennon on the radio and I knew in that moment that you would be my beautiful boy. You are, because your beauty runs deep. It runs through how kind you are, how thoughtful, how determined. It’s part of your lanky limbs and cowlicks and ability to crack a joke at exactly the right moment. I love you more every day, every inch, every kind word.

May you stay this weird forever, my love.

I’m observance of Nation Fried Chicken Day yesterday I tried my hand at making a keto friendly hot chicken. I was beyond impressed with how it turned out. I butchered @joshuaweissman ‘s hot chicken recipe to make it work. Got this down to about 5 net carbs (6 with the cole slaw). #hotchicken #nationalfriedchickenday #papalike #ketofriendly by @free_handys

Cooking felt horrible today while sweating off vaccine side effects but having a full belly is medicine in itself. I made keto stir fry with cauliflower rice and almond flour coated chicken. Highly recommend. #ketocooking by @free_handys

Found a new product that has been making keto so much easier! I was able to make chips for a steak chilaquiles (about 10 net carbs) and was able to have some tacos (about 3 net carbs a piece) thanks to @mrtortilla low carb tortillas! #lowcarb #keto #foodhigh taken in Los Angeles, California by @free_handys

“The Wellerman”

“...to bring us sugar and tea and rum.”

1.5 oz Lost Spirits Navy Style Rum
3/4 oz homemade Black Tea simple syrup
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice

Pour ingredients into shaker with ice and shake until cold. Strain into chilled coup glass

Garnish with a lemon slice.

Homemade Black Tea Simple Syrup:

Bring 1 cup of water to a boil and steep 4 teaspoons or 4 bags of black tea for 5 minutes.
Remove tea bags and add 1 cup of sugar and return to heat until sugar is dissolved.

Allow to cool before use.
