This was from 2007, the grand opening flyer of THE BASSMENT 2 Hip Hop Shop our second location when I first bought the building at 1415 North Ashland. I was 24 years old and bought the building with no cosigner and no job. I was a hungry kid trying to figure out a way to make shit happen. I just wanted to do something cool for the city. Hip Hop was a way a mixed raced kid from the north side of Chicago could find a sense of belonging and I used that to fuel my passion and THE BASSMENT was something that you grew out of that.

As I grow older I realize that making a living doing something you love is a very rare thing and I'm grateful for the good and bad things that have happened to me in my life.

People sometimes ask how i started, and I always answer with Blood Sweat and Tears. No rich family and no drug money. The drugs came after, when I bit more than I could chew and made some bad choices, but it's how you learn from those choices that make you who you are today. Almost 20 years after I bought 1415 N. Ashland, we finally took down the original Bassment canopy.
Funny part is, the only reason we put that big ass canopy up in the first place was to cover the brick we couldn't afford to fix. 😂
Now we can… cuz we rich. LOL.
That canopy has been there through every version of the building and a whole lot of life in between. Definitely not throwing it away.
So what should we do with it? Where should the original Bassment canopy live next?
