What’s happening in Chicago’s underground? For EPISODE 1, I sit down with artist and curator, @lxrdkeno , of @freemindchi , a local collective specializing in darker (techno-focused) genres of electronic music including gabber, schranz, hardgroove, bochka, and more. This was my first time at a Free Mind event, and I was immediately struck but its strong sense of community. The DJs each brought something new to the dance floor - and every attendee was fully present (no one was on their phone during their event). You could immediately sense that Free Mind has garnered a group of followers dedicated purely to the love of the music and a fearlessness of exploring less mainstream genres. In this interview, ERØS discusses the foundations of Free Mind, its place in the community, and the challenges faced by artists in Chicago’s music scene. Catch their next event on August 22nd . #Techno #interview #musicjournalism #gabber #industrial by @freemindchi

FREE MIND RECORDS: NEW FACE, NEW SOUND, NEW WEEK WE ARE HONORED TO INTRODUCE OUR FOURTH GUEST: ZEELAA (@zeelaa ) zeelaa is a Chicago-based producer whose career spans more than a decade, evolving from the mid-2010s trap and bass-music scene into contemporary techno and underground club music. zeelaa first gained attention in the mid-2010s through trap & hardstyle edits, bass-heavy remixes, and electronic music blog coverage with some of his most notable remixes accumulating millions of plays collectively on SoundCloud. He would join the collective MMXV in 2015, with other notable artists such as Crankdat & Lukav. His remixes, including Sub Focus’ “Turn Back Time” got support from artists like Kayzo, Adventure Club, and Krewella. In recent years, zeelaa has increasingly explored techno and genre-blending club production. Starting the independent label Veil Chicago, His catalog has evolved into hypnotic, hard hitting, dark techno meant to entrance you on the dance floor, getting the support of heavy hitters in the scene like Dj Dextro & Amotik. Despite his catalog becoming increasingly dark and hypnotic, you will find him dropping aggressive schranz-esque tracks like “BYB” with Alby Loud, & club bootlegs of artists such as Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, A$AP Rocky, and Playboi Carti. Now, he is preparing for a busy year packed with releases of new tracks, both independently and through some notable labels! WE THANK ZEELAA FOR TAKING THE TIME TO BRING US HIS HYPNOTIC GROOVES TO THE DECKS ALL MIXES WILL BE AVAILABLE ON SOUNDCLOUD ONLY 🖤 by @freemindchi

NANGOBI HAS ALWAYS CAME OUT TO SUPPORT AND MOTIVATE THE FREE MIND COMMUNITY AND UNDERGROUND SCENE OVERALL. NANGOBI IS AMAZING HUMAN BEING, ARTIST, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY FRIEND 😈✨ WHO IS NANGOBI?! NANGOBI began her journey into electronic music in 2023 while living in a rural Ugandan village as an American volunteer. Surrounded by the region’s growing underground scene and spontaneous open-air parties, she picked up her first controller and quickly immersed herself in the rhythms of house and techno emerging across East Africa. In just two years, NANGOBI carved out a name within Uganda’s electronic community, performing with collectives such as Underground Kampala and SOULTRI3E before bringing her sound to Chicago. Since relocating, she has quickly established herself within the city’s underground scene, with performances at Smoke & Mirrors and other community-driven events that showcase her distinct approach to techno. Her sets are dark and psychedelic, weaving hypnotic grooves with intricate textures and trance-elements.  Beyond the decks, NANGOBI is committed to building more inclusive dance floors. As a resident DJ, founding member, and event curator for the Femme Frequencies techno collective, she actively creates platforms that support, connect, and uplift women and gender-diverse artists, fostering spaces where emerging talent and community can thrive. It is her mission to foster an electronic music movement in both the United States and developing countries around the world, starting in Sub-Saharan Africa.
