Tomorrow marks 37 years since @freestatebeer opened, breaking a century-long drought as the first legal brewery in Kansas since the 1880s.

In 1880, Kansas became the first state to write prohibition into its constitution. When federal prohibition ended in 1933, Kansas held on until 1948. Microbreweries weren’t allowed until 1987.

Chuck Magerl lobbied for years to make it happen. His family history in brewing runs deep — a grandfather sent to Leavenworth Penitentiary for distributing alcohol during Prohibition, and a relative who ran a Kansas City saloon in 1909.

In 1988, Magerl and his crew transformed the old Union Bus Depot at 636 Massachusetts into the brewery that would revive Kansas’s brewing tradition.

Free State opened on February 23, 1989. Two years later, Ad Astra Ale won bronze at the 1991 Great American Beer Festival.

Today, Free State is a Lawrence staple and a pioneer in Kansas’s craft beer industry.

Tonight's presenter is Dr. Ana Rita C. Morais, the Deputy Director of the Wonderful Institute for Sustainable Engineering (WISE) and Assistant Professor in Chemical & Petroleum Engineering.

In this talk, Dr. Morais will share how CO₂ can be leveraged to make chemical processing of PE waste, and potentially other plastics, more efficient, more selective, and more sustainable. This free presentation and Q&A session will be in the beer hall. Seating is limited, so we encourage you to arrive early! by @freestatebeer

We are thrilled to announce a planned community mural taking place at our production facility in East Lawrence! Dave Loewenstein will spearhead the project, entitled “Estamos Aquí / We Are Here,”. It is set to be 20 feet tall by 50 feet wide upon completion.

Loewenstein said, “the mural reflects the Lawrence Loop and all the creatures that have coexisted in the area. The final imagery includes fireflies, a tandem bicycle, a snake and a mosasaur.” by @freestatebeer
