Brooklyn roots. Guyanese heritage. A woman of the African diaspora. 1st generation born in America. Proud. πŸ™ŒπŸΎβ€ It is our own responsibility to teach our children about who they are. A cultural celebration/event may only last for a day or a month at a time, but we live in our skin every single day. Be proud of who you are. And if you don't know your family's history or if you're feeling a little lost, go out there, connect, do research and learn! The more you learn about yourself, the more confident you feel about who you are and your purpose. πŸ™ŒπŸΎ Learning about others will also help you see that we are more alike than we are different. And those unique differences are beautiful as well. ❀

Mokou (Mogo) is a word for person, human or someone, in Bambara dialect spoken in Mali, Africa. When said twice, it means everybody or all people.

This song is a message to all about forgiveness, coming together and unity.

For me, forgiving someone does not mean forgetting what was done and just returning back to how things used to be. It won't work for me.

One act can be seen as a mistake, but repeated behavior is a decision. No hate, but things won't be the same... time to change, adjust and put boundaries in place.

Human nature is interesting.

In the 90s, I watched the original episodes of 'A Different World'. I loved seeing Black students, educators and staff within a higher education space emphasizing the importance of learning, exercising creativity, navigating important social/life issues, and doing it all with style and grace. I was inspired. I did not truly understand some of what I saw back then, until I attended college in the early 2000s. Then it all came together for me.

Watching the newly revamped 2026 'A Different World' episodes brought me so much nostalgia. No, I did not attend an HBCU (historically Black college or university). However, the institution that I went to had such a vibrant and active student life program with a wide variety of diverse interest groups, academic/professional clubs and cultural organizations.

I stepped out, I got involved, I connected with others who were both similar and different from me; I had many experiences (hard ones too), I learned a lot of lessons, I had fun and most importantly, I grew.

I imagine that if I did not see anyone like me, if I did not feel the love from the community, if being a better me was not a priority, if no one ever encouraged me and if I did not have opportunities for expression and self-exploration, I probably would not be the version of me that I am today. 🀎

@teamsoca was one of the many businesses in the building. Can't wait to rock my "Soca music raised me." t-shirt! I definitely grew up on Tiney Winey, Dutty Teaser and Nanny Wine. I call it the soca trinity! πŸ˜„β€οΈ by @freeupcm

I had no idea what the lyrics were saying, but I knew that I connected with the sound and emotional expression. I could feel it.

After doing some research, I learned that Amadou and Mariam are singers from Mali, and they are both blind. This particular song, "Se Te Djon Ye" speaks of their experiences of living with visual impairment, the challenges that they face, and their faith in God to soothe them.

The song is performed in Bambara dialect, which is widely spoken in Mali. πŸ‡²πŸ‡±

Today, September 22, 2026, is the first day of the season for shedding. It's officially Fall. All the leaves turn brown and find their way to the ground. The wind whistles through the streets, shaking the branches as we crunch leaves under our feet. Early mornings look like night and the sun seems so distant in the sky.

Fall shows us that everything in nature has its place and serves a purpose. It is the moment to do what is necessary to prepare for the next phase; shedding to make room for new growth... a natural part of the whole cycle.

I continue to reflect as life changes, and try my best to maneuver with faith, gratitude and grace.

I hope this season treats you well. 🀎 Take care.

πŸ“· Has been hanging on my wall for years. πŸ™ŒπŸΎ
