Global Mindset Moment: This week, we welcomed author and illustrator Cara Carmina to French International! Cara was born in Mexico and also spent time in Canada, bringing a world of languages and perspectives to our kindergarten, first, and second graders. Students listened to her story about artist Frida Kahlo, then created their own Frida-inspired illustrations with Cara’s guidance. She also signed books for our community and shared an animated film about the artist. Experiences like these introduce students to new voices, cultures, and perspectives. They also bring our strategic plan’s Presence pillar to life as we work to make French International a cultural hub for our region.

Cédric and Nadine's classes have partnered for weekly cross-division collaboration this year. They spend time in the forest, using nature as a classroom for exploration and connection. Last week, Lauren, pre-k parent and park ranger, led the classes in nature exploration and a walk through the forest. Rain or shine, outdoor learning is central to what we do here. Experiences like these nurture curiosity, encourage students to take risks, and help them build meaningful connections with each other and with nature.

Last week, sixth grade took learning beyond the classroom to Outdoor School! Students learned about the geological history of the region, searched for fossils, and gazed at the vastness of the stars, all while building friendships, growing in independence, and strengthening their sense of community. These were four important days for our sixth graders, full of adventure, learning, and memories that will last throughout Middle School!

Global Mindset Moment: To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, our sixth graders in beginning Spanish visited kindergarten classes to teach their younger peers a few Spanish words and phrases. Students practiced introducing themselves and greeting one another, sang the Spanish alphabet song, and danced together. These cross-division connections create important opportunities for students to learn from one another, build confidence, and celebrate language and culture.

Since visiting the apple orchard, pre-k students have been exploring all things pomme! They've made apple juice, applesauce, apple cakes, and last week, Soukeïna's class made mini apple tarts. But the apples aren’t just for eating! Teachers are incorporating them into science and math activities, turning one fall field trip into opportunities to explore, create, and discover.

Eighth graders' first science unit of the year is exploring atomic structure and how scientists use models to understand invisible patterns. As part of the unit, students investigated the behavior of matter using dry ice. They placed dry ice in warm water and then experimented with dry ice and soapy water. Our eighth-grade scientists made observations, gained a better understanding of the structures, and got a firsthand look at some really cool reactions.

Global Mindset Moment: For two weeks this month, 20 students from the Greenhouse School in Chile joined some of our eighth graders and their families for a cultural exchange. The Chilean visitors attended classes, joined our Peace Day celebration, and explored the Pacific Northwest with their host families. The most meaningful part of the experience was learning from one another, discovering shared interests, experiencing different traditions, and building friendships across cultures. In May, we will send a group of eighth graders to Chile to continue the exchange and reconnect with the friends they made here in Portland. This exchange is essential to our mission and strategic plan to educate empathetic, global leaders.

This year, Middle School students have more design class options, giving them a chance to explore new interests. Snack design has been a fun addition as an option for sixth graders. Recently, students interviewed a classmate about their favorite snacks and cuisines, then designed a snack plate specifically for their “client.” They explained their ingredient choices and how they assembled the plate, combining creativity, culinary skills, and problem-solving.

What a special visit! On Friday, we welcomed former Head of School J.F. Genay back to Portland and French International for a visit to campus, including a tour of our new buildings and the Middle School, which he had never seen! Together with former Head of School Pam Dreisin and current Head of School Scott Hardister, we celebrated the past, present, and future of French International. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this special gathering possible. We’re grateful for the people who have shaped French International and continue to be part of our story, which, as Genay says, is a story of love.

Friday was the Mid-Autumn Festival, a special holiday in many countries around the world. To celebrate, Laure’s class learned about the holiday, its traditions, and what it represents. Students also created their own lanterns to take home and share with their families. A special thank you to our parent volunteers for bringing their culture and traditions into the classroom and helping our students expand their understanding of the world around them.

Global Mindset Moment: On September 21, we gathered as a community to celebrate International Day of Peace with poetry, art, stories, and music. The day included Maternelle students creating posters about what peace means to them, Lower School students sharing poems in the languages they speak at home, and our Middle School choir and visiting students from Chile performing a song for everyone. The celebration was a reflection of who we are: a community connected by many languages, cultures, and voices. One school with a united vision and purpose.

Hands-on learning in preschool includes weekly baking! Mina’s class recently made madeleines together, with students helping throughout the process, including mixing ingredients and tasting the finished treats. Baking offers opportunities to explore new foods and cultures while building fine motor skills, practicing sequencing, and learning through collaboration.
