Hello and Bienvenue to French Footnotes 🇫🇷📖

I’m Justine, a translator, French teacher and linguistics enthusiast drawn to the stories and history behind French language and culture.

A language is not just a combination of vocabulary, grammar and syntax. It carries traces of history, culture, memories, and human connection.

That’s what I want to explore here: the layers behind the French language. Not just how we use it, but how it became what it is today.

What you will find in French Footnotes:
🔎 Linguistic curiosities and the stories behind the French language
🏛️ French heritage, traditions, and cultural references
🎬 Books, films, and ideas that have shaped French culture
🧠 Reflections on language, learning, and the worlds behind words

And more 🙂

So, if you are learning French or are simply curious about languages, I hope you’ll enjoy exploring these little footnotes with me.

Merci 🤗

Speaking another language means letting people hear you think, search for words, make mistakes and express yourself in ways that don't always come easily.

You don't have to wait until you feel completely confident to take up space in a language. You can be hesitant and still have something to say. by @frenchfootnotes.learn

Language apps can help you learn words, notice patterns and build a little daily momentum.

But there’s a point where you have to stop preparing to speak and actually speak. So, let yourself make mistakes, search for words, hesitate, and say things imperfectly. That's how you will learn! 🤍 taken in Paris, France by @frenchfootnotes.learn

What do a small cake and childhood memory have in common?
The answer comes from literature: la madeleine de Proust.

The expression is found in Proust’s novel “In Search of Lost Time”. It is a metaphor that describes a sensation that awakes a long-lasting memory.

What is your madeleine de Proust?

Bon courage is one of those French expressions that doesn’t quite have a direct equivalent in English.

It’s not only for big challenges. You can say it before work, an exam, an appointment, or anything you know someone isn’t particularly looking forward to.

It’s a small way of recognising that something might be difficult or tiring. by @frenchfootnotes.learn

Little time to learn French today? I get it.

But as a language learner myself, I’ve found that even 15 minutes a day can make a real difference.

Words evolve as we speak them. They get misheard, reshaped, reinterpreted and reinvented along the way.
That is exactly how formage became fromage.
