Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Jake Robbins, the newest member of Frenchtown Fire’s resident program!

Jake is a Missoula native who joined the resident program with a big goal in mind: building a career as a firefighter/paramedic serving rural or backcountry communities. He knew Frenchtown Fire would be a great place to learn, grow and work toward that dream. As Jake shared, “I fell in love with the idea of being a firefighter since I was in preschool and always knew in some capacity, I would find a way to join the fire service.”

After several months in the program, Jake says that one of his favorite parts has been connecting with the community. “Whether it’s showing little kids the engine or holding doors for folks at the grocery store. To me that’s what it’s all about, being a kind and caring hand for our community.”

We’re excited to have Jake as part of the Frenchtown Fire family and can’t wait to see all the ways he continues to serve, learn, and shine. Please help us welcome to Jake! by @frenchtownfire

Resident Spotlight: Tori Stout

“I wanted a career that would challenge me physically and mentally—one that lets me spend time outdoors, give back to my community, and make a meaningful difference,” says Tori.

Tori is also interested in the medical field and is excited to keep building her skills as an emergency responder. One of her favorite parts so far has been running calls with other residents from their house stations and learning alongside her peers.

Structure fires are a high-risk low-frequency event for the fire service. At Frenchtown Fire, we train regularly with live fire in our burn building so that our personnel are proficient with the tasks and tactics needed to put out fires safely and effectively.

These last two months we have run scenarios with fires in different locations, with different access issues, simulated trapped occupants, and with varying levels of staffing to best simulate what we will encounter on an actual incident. Regardless of our years of experience or our roles on our department, we all learn new things and polish our current skills on these training days. by @frenchtownfire

Frenchtown Fire joined with personnel from the Ninemile Ranger District this week for our annual wildland refresher. As summer approaches, it is important that we prepare for our wildland fire season. This training was a review of last year’s fires, both locally and nationally, as well as common trends with regards to accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Trainings like this also provide a great opportunity for us to meet and interact with our Forest Service response partners and build the inter-agency relationships that serve us well as we respond to local fires. Big thanks to the Ninemile folks for a great refresher! by @frenchtownfire

Resident Spotlight

As a member of FRFD’s resident program, Emerson Eckhardt brings a strong passion for emergency medicine. Born and raised in Billings, Montana, Emerson joined the program last August and is enthusiastic about the path ahead.

“I applied to this program because I want to be a firefighter/medic and I knew it would provide the right experience and mentorship to help me get there,” Emerson shared.

After her first ride-along with the department, Emerson was struck by the crew’s dedication to serving others and their commitment to continuous learning and growth. While gaining hands-on experience in firefighting, her EMT instruction played a pivotal role in confirming her desire to pursue a career in emergency medicine and become a firefighter/medic.

Reflecting on her journey so far, Emerson noted a meaningful milestone. “My favorite memory was my dad pinning my badge at fire academy graduation. I am proud to say that the qualities he instilled in me, and the unwavering support of my mom, has made me strong enough to be here today.”

We proudly welcome Emerson to the fire service and to the Frenchtown Fire community. We are excited to see Emerson’s dedication and commitment to learning and serving others. by @frenchtownfire

Resident Spotlight
This month we recognize Simon Beery, a resident with FRFD. Simon is from Okanogan, WA and began the resident program in June, right after graduating high school. During his high school career, he was a junior firefighter at his local fire department, and also took his EMT training class. " I applied to FRFD because I knew I wanted to go somewhere that would challenge me to grow as a firefighter and as a person and the Frenchtown Resident Program shines in that aspect."
Simon's interest in pursuing a career with the fire service has many facets. "Bringing joy to the community, the adrenaline, culture, and timeless knowledge to be passed down", are just a few.
And in his short time with Frenchtown, he has had some memorable experiences. Like the time he was staged on a ridgeline above the valley during a major lightning storm, and tracking down fires in the middle of the night. "There was something so exciting and so peaceful about it that I will never forget."
Please help us to welcome Simon to Frenchtown Fire. And congrats on choosing this career path with FRFD's Resident Program! by @frenchtownfire

Just before Thanksgiving, our firefighters participated in the last live fire training of the season. As you can see from the photos, we have assembled a "burn building" from shipping containers modified both to resemble the interior of a house and to withstand the stress of repeated fire ignitions and extinguishments. In this scenario one of our crews needed to advance 50 feet into the structure, navigating through furniture and other obstacles, to extinguish the fire (pallets and scrap lumber) while the second crew searched for and removed victims (manikins). We make things a bit more challenging by generating additional smoke to limit visibility.

Live fire training is crucial training for our recruits and experienced members as we get to practice hose management, crew cohesion, communication, fire control, and search techniques in a controlled, but hostile, environment. We are grateful for our volunteers, residents, and paid staff who have spent countless hours building, maintaining, and modifying this burn building over the years. Their investment into our future and our community's safety is greatly appreciated. by @frenchtownfire

From all of us at Frenchtown Fire, we want to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.

As we gather with family and friends this holiday, we are reminded of how grateful we are for the ongoing trust and support of our community. Serving you is an honor and a privilege we never take for granted.

We are also thankful for our mutual aid partners: the local, state, and federal agencies we rely on year in and year out.

We wish all of you a holiday filled with warmth, safety and moments of joy. And as always, if you need us we are here for you day and night.

Wishing you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
