Wow, this was tough. A couple of days (I started late) to write, produce and submit a 2 to 5 minute pilot for @thebigscreenhack.

Turns out AI tools don’t like swear words either.

With unlimited credits and more time I’d have made it the true oner I intended (what an ambitiously horrible idea that was). For what this competition was, I think it came out well… in hard times.

A Western. Shot in Romania. A mise en abyme.

When he first asked me to join him in writing the script based on a loose but strong idea, I was flattered, yet skeptical. No way could, nor would, we make something this big. Yet in less than 6 months, @val.fog just led the creation of a cinematic monument from nothing, and I was fortunate enough that he brought me along with him.

This experience, though far from finished as we enter post-production, has been both invaluable and tough. Boundaries were tested over and over, but that is part of the process.

Many lessons learned and I’m ready for more. Too many brilliant people to tag in this ego post, especially for how much they welcomed me to Romania, but stay tuned for upcoming teasers in which they’ll all be tagged. taken in Castel Film Studios Bucharest Romania by @freshgarbagefilms

My last week with @cinemadamare brought me to Noventa di Piave, a small town near Venice where Ernest Hemingway was wounded during the war. I had hoped to make a satire of his work and wanted to cast @wyfossy for obvious reasons. Instead, with his guidance and expertise, I was honored to create this homage.

We adapted a section of A Farewell to Arms—set in the very place we were shooting—retelling the story of American expatriate Frederic Henry and his love affair with English nurse Catherine Barkley against the backdrop of the Italian campaign of WWI.

Despite being well-prepared, we again had less than a week to finish. Many of us were committed to other projects, and the rain forced us to scramble (you can see its mark in the final cut). Still, this may have been my best film of the program. Wyatt directed and helped plan our shots, while I operated the most professional rig I’ve ever worked with, focused on guiding the actors, organized the shoots—and, maybe what I’m proudest of—pulled together a period drama with costumes sourced from the only thrift shop in town (with @leoniefraser help of course). None of it could’ve turned out this way without the brilliant performances and help from everyone on the team.

Week 4 of @cinemadamare took us to Vallo della Lucania - the furthest south we’d gone in Italy so far. A mountain town with breathtaking landscapes, it gave me time to explore since none of my ideas took off.

Late in the week, I decided to hack together an experimental short. What started as a quick shoot followed by a chill day at the beach with friends suddenly transformed into our most ambitious challenge yet: “Let’s just make something here today.” A single camera, no sound equipment, no light kits, no monitors, and definitely no script.

The result? A mix of comedy, thriller, and pure improvisation, shot in a single day and edited the next. Somehow we captured 4-shots with rocks as tripods and some tricks. The camera nearly drowned. With plenty of inside jokes sprinkled in for those who know the program, this one was as much about play as it was about pushing limits.

Huge thanks to an insanely fun and talented team for making it happen.

Week 3 of @cinemadamare in Fiuggi was a different kind of experience. I didn’t write or direct this time—just helped produce a couple of shorts. But for the first time ever, I stepped in front of the camera.

Our second stop with @cinemadamare was Spoltore - a castle-topped village near Pescara in Abruzzo. We had the privilege of shooting in breathtaking locations like @conventosanpanfilo as well as @the_pamphilis amazing home, and out on the open sea.

This time I stepped in as lead producer, co-writer with my dear friend @paulazur, and even helped direct. We’re only sharing a teaser for now since this one is headed to festivals. I’ll just say it explores the relationship with the divine. What that means is for the viewer to decide.

The shoot came with challenges: a bigger team, tighter schedule, and locations that were stunning but hard to lock down and access, which I was solely responsible for. Still, thanks to an incredible crew, it came together.

This summer I had the privilege of joining the @cinemadamare Traveling Film Campus, knowing little about professional filmmaking, and even less about what I was stepping into.

Our first stop was Foiano di Val Fortore, a village tucked in the hills of southern Italy, surrounded by windmills and a community that welcomed us like family. We arrived just in time for their biggest celebration, the festival of San Giovanni Eremita (Saint John the Hermit). Naturally, in just 7 days I made a film about… a weirdo. And it’s definitely weird.

JONNY isn’t just about a character. It’s shaped by the stories, legends, and people of Foiano. Maybe it’s really a meditation on the illusion of identity; how we only exist once others see us, name us, and care enough to make us real.

The process was chaotic, to say the least. Scenes were scrapped, stories rewritten, ideas reshaped. Holy hell did I learn a lot about directing. Technical issues reminded me how vital lighting is, especially when you have none. It turned out nothing like I imagined, but something I can be proud of finishing. I’m reminded once again that filmmaking is never a solo act, and this film only exists because of incredible people - the first film I’ve ever written, directed, and produced with a team.

Five years ago I wrote a sketch. It was slightly altered, and then nearly produced in LA…then Covid hit.

Two years ago, I said fuck it. I’m cocky and delusionally ambitious. I’ve never done anything like this, but it should be easy to do on my own. And without any AI.

Figuring out what kind of gear to rent and how to use it? Location scouting? Tough as fuck. Shooting and directing it, in two days, with one of my best friends as the actor - who turned out to be a brilliant performer, but certainly is no actor himself - was challenging enough. Editing? Visual effects? Sound design? I’d rather never do any of that again.

After dusting off an unfinished version from an old hard drive, I can sincerely say this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and I’m not even satisfied with it. The “punchline” especially didn’t pan out the way I had hoped.

It’s no wonder productions take so much collaboration from so many professionals. I’m a writer, maybe a decent director, but I’m no cameraman, sound engineer, production designer, art director, location manager, makeup artist, costumer designer, grip, gaffer, editor…I could go on.

I need to be done with it, so here it is. Mad respect to film production crews, above and below the line.

And special thanks to Emilie Hagen for being the most convincing and sexy Russian car ever.
