It’s my birthday again. Which, this time around, means that the final year of my 30’s officially starts now. Before I close ‘em out, I wanted to get back to doing what I enjoy most – sharing music that I love. To that end, I’ve been working (for probably way too long) on a new series of mixes that’ll give me an excuse to dive deep into all different genres, styles, and eras of my personal collection (after all, why tf do I have all these heavy ass records and shelves upon shelves of CD’s if I’m not sharing them?!?), and I told myself that today was my deadline to finally call the first one ‘done’ and put it out once and for all. So, I present to you: ‘HEAVY SONGS – Going Wrong (1966-1976)’ A mix of some personal favorites from the heavier side of 60’s/70’s rock, including psych, jazz-rock, prog, Zamrock, garage, classic Dad rock – basically, all the rocks. Plenty of samples, breakbeats, and cover songs, known and relatively obscure alike, are in all there as well. Formatted more like a re-issue compilation than a DJ mix, each song on here was broken down to its individual parts and given a new mix and re-edit just for this set. 18 songs, 1 hour 23 min in all. This first mix was inspired by, in no particular order: @phillytripledouble and @diplo’s AEIOU mixes; the New Jersey classic rock radio stations I grew up on in the 90’s; the time that @realpeterock made a beat out of one of the songs on here using only my car’s CD stereo (!!!); @Madlib, @Waajeed, @JustBlaze, @GaslampKiller, @NowAgain; riffs, rifts, and grifts; disappearing acts; @weareAan absolutely shredding at The Firkin last year; the luxury of thick walls with no neighbors; moving boxes; and ice cream cake. It’s up on Soundcloud for now, but I’m not sure how long things like this can stay up over there anymore, so follow the Fresh Selects Patreon for the more reliable link plus first dibs on the next mixes, as well as full tracklists and liner notes. by @freshselectslabel

Today marks 10 full years of @inglewoodSiR ‘Seven Sundays’ – an album that has become not only a cornerstone of what we do here at Fresh Selects, but a damn near prescient launching pad for so many of those involved. When SiR last played here in our hometown of Portland, he took it upon himself to share some of the the story behind it all on-stage, and he did so a little more succinctly (and generously) than we could even try to here, so — we’ll let him tell it to you. For our side of the equation, we’re offering up an all new remix from the album – with one of SiR’s most trusted collaborators, @DKThePunisher, providing a fresh new take on the ‘Seven Sundays’ highlight, “In The Sky.” On top of that – we’re also taking this as a chance to soft-launch our new ‘home away from home’ that we’ve been gearing up for over on @Patreon. So, as of right now, we’ve giving away the “In The Sky” remix as a free download to everyone who signs up to follow us on there (membership is completely free right now, but there’s also an option of getting in on the groundfloor at a special early price for what later will be our Premium tier). @WeAreAan “Speculum Aenigmate” – music video out now everywhere The first official clip from Aan’s new ‘Over The Mountain’ album (out now on vinyl & digital, as if you didn’t know) was premiered today by @weekinpop! Fully embracing the song’s Jorge Luis Borges-inspired surrealist feel, analog visualist Mike Adame compiled footage from an archive of assorted VHS tapes and cut-up pages from ‘60s photography magazines – then collaged and re-freaked them all together through a vintage Panasonic mixer. What you see here is only a small sliver of the madness contained inside, so be sure to seek it out on YouTube for the full experience. Our bio link’s got you covered there. Today is the day! @WeAreAan ‘Over The Mountain’ is out now everywhere, just in time to completely disrupt your ‘Best Of 2024’ lists that you were so sure you were done with. The album is available now on special limited edition double vinyl (12” LP and 7” 45!) exclusively via our Bandcamp (and just so it happens to #BandcampFriday today!), before it hits record stores worldwide in January, and is of course also streaming everywhere right now as well. A few words on the opus that is ‘OTM’, from the band’s own @BudWilsonJr: “’Over the Mountain’ took a few years to make, navigating how best to produce a record in the time of social distancing. Most of the songs were skeletons before I’d bring them into the studio. Maybe a chord structure and a meter, a few words as place holders. From there we’d throw everything at them before carving away at the quickly rendered layers. It was a constant and often pleasant surprise to go macro and realize each song had its own defined story and message. There’s a lot of hope and love in many of the cuts, which felt more exciting and dangerous than being blue or pointedly angry. A range of emotions, ideas and vulnerabilities found their place in what I believe is the best and most thorough collection of songs I’ve assembled.
