Ela Mete / As It Is, 2024
Installation

Happy birth day Proem, as it is.

“
As It Is explores how reality might shift if pre-fixed
judgements and assumptions; the veil in front of our blurry eyes is lifted.
The reality in which a rock moves and changes in stillness, a plant turns her head around each day. The reality in which all that is man-made is natural.
The reality which is
surreal, abnormal, imperfect, beyond logic and all natural.
The performer creates its own world and being, free
from the obligations of what is acceptable in everyday life.
The stage, a space seemingly
unreal, holds the freedom of being real; with no obligation to fit in.
Our separateness from nature is delusional.
The performer is a
ever-changing, delphic, uncanny entity.
Just like everything else,
Being,
 As It Is.

Ela is an Istanbul-based multidisciplinary artist, textile designer, and color researcher. Allowing the process to take the lead, her work evolves around found materials, extracting color from nature and creating a poetic narrative through imagery, textiles, and performance.  She believes in the innate creativity of human nature and allows herself to freely explore this dimension; by tuning in the moment, by being rather than doing and following the rhythm.

Elif Bayram / 109456321 steps and 30 years in and around my neighborhood

What forms a map? Can a bird’s nest, a broken chair, a magnolia tree, a mossy stone, a family home be included? What information do they convey? What stories do they carry, guiding us through the tapestry of past, present, and future? Who determines significance—authority’s markers or the whispers of memory? Whose truths do these maps unveil, made for whom and revealing what? Can memories guide us through physical and emotional landscapes?

Seeking our path, drawing my map—I search for them.

Distinguishing between collective and individual memories, explicit details and implicit meanings intertwine. What endures in a place over time—what stays, what fades? What or who remains, more resilient than memories, bearing witness?

Seeking our path, drawing my map—I rely on them.

This is an exploration to reveal maps beyond navigation tools—symbols of space, memory, and identity.

Seeking our path, drawing my map—I need them.

Öykü Özgencil / Mythocondria, 2019 –
Multimedia, Variable dimensions

Inspired by the etymology of “Mitochondria”, the project involves local participants to trace and record narratives, stories, songs, mother tongues, or lullabies while knitting a tentacular net, a cocoon, a womb. The project interrogates the construction of metanarratives – where oral literature becomes a carrier between conscious and unconscious as well as individual and collective memory.

The installation in Proem, was combined with a sound piece and a video that are complementary to the encounter of Mythocondria and Proem. (Swipe to read more)

*As a constantly mutating creature in Mythocondria, the sound hovers above us like an autonomous entity that “chooses” to call attention to various parts of the installation.
Sound Design: Aytaç Aybak

*‘Can combining the memories of others help piece together my grandmother’s memories?’
The artist’s grandmother, who has dementia, merges the stories and patterns of various women while answering questions about her memories. Focusing specifically on her grandmother’s tales and recollections, the artist asks questions on femininity, love and dreams.
Video: Duygu Yasa

Öykü Özgencil works at the intersection of oral culture, text, and performance art, using socially-engaged practices. Her research-based production alludes to the circular, non-binary, and permeable aspects inherent in these fields, as well as the historically repressed perspectives that they embody. Her practice, which encompasses various mediums, including text, textile, performance, and installation, alongside collective, ancestral, and speculative experiments on the concept of ‘otherness’, draws sustenance from interspecific ecologies, symbolism, semiotics, linguistics, and anthropology while questioning narratives as production of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ (self and other), gender politics and colonialism.
Öykü’s works have been exhibited in Hošek Contemporary, Istanbul Design Biennial, and Milan Design Week. She is currently doing her MA in Contemporary Art Praxis at DAI.

Freya is back
After silence and deprivation
The world was not a better place before, but since March, we were feeling heavy.
Everything that is happening in Turkey and all over the planet, all that the algorithm of the parallel “reality” doesn’t like us to talk about, prevented us from honoring and nurturing the creations and ideas that our systems require and need.

Everything feels at risk and continues to struggle with our integrity.
It’s hard to maintain sanity in all this violence, injustice and separation.
We want the basic rights to do their job. That’s why we have them. We want justice.
Manifesting by creating.

Dila Yumurtacı / Anicca: Somatic Encounters

Anicca: Somatic Encounters, FREYAalt hosted one of its forms during the participatory exhibition Proem, explores the body’s capacity to carry emotions, thoughts and memories focusing on different nervous systems we possess. Transcending beyond language, the project allows us to understand the potential healings that may occur through bodily sensations. It is an experience that deepens softness within our bodies as we encounter other bodies.
&
Anicca is a long-term research and performance project inviting intimate connections via Instagram or Zoom, where the artist shares personal diary entries and documents participants’ responses in various creative formats, exploring the Buddhist concept of Anicca ‘impermanence’. Started in 2019 in a physical format, turned into one-to-one online performance in 2020, and presented in an artistic research conference in 2024, Anicca continues to take different forms in various spaces and among diverse groups of people. By transforming personal narratives into collective ones, Anicca invites us to embrace intimacy through sharing vulnerability, fostering a sense of connection with ourselves, the environment and all the living beings.

-

🌊 Dila Yumurtacı is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, facilitator, and founder of @dadansofficial collective. Her practice revolves around participatory dynamics, encompassing performance, dance, video, and installation while the subject matter evolves in relation to consciousness. Her exploration extends to investigating potential spaces for healing fostering intimacy and creativity through embodied practices by bringing people together to collaborate, create, and experience collectively. Currently based in Porto, she’s actively pursuing her PhD in Arts&Science at Catolica University, thesis about More-Than-Human Interconnectedness in relation to Eco-Somatics and Eco-Consciousness.

Camp day 3
Berlin - july 2024
Erro and I took part in an exhibition by building a camp.
Our intervention invited visitors to gather in an unconventional but intuitive way.

During the four days of the exhibition; we built and inhabited the camp, designing shelter, furniture and a ladder for nighttime access. The camp was located within the walled garden of @glogauair, built using materials found on site. The text performed is 'Public Space' by Wim Cuyvers.
Thanks to all friends and strangers who visited, shared a hot meal and heartfelt camp stories with us. ⛺

Woven Diary is a two-part project by artist Lâl Melisa Öztaşkın, consisting of a photobook and a sculptural installation. Spanning the years 2019 to 2024, the photobook captures fleeting moments across various cities, including Rishikesh, London, Bodrum, and Istanbul. The images are intuitively arranged around recurring visual patterns, creating a rhythmic flow that transforms repetition into both a personal archive and a fresh perspective on the world. The photographs evoke a sense of the “lost city,” featuring overlooked details such as abandoned urban doorways, weeds sprouting from sidewalks, sewage drains, scattered refuse, reflective surfaces, and the watchful gaze of security cameras. These seemingly mundane elements become portals into the ephemeral layers of urban life.

The second part of the project extends the photobook’s aesthetic into a three-dimensional form: a concrete pedestal that embodies the materiality and visual language of the book.
The photobook display was created as an off deployment for Proem. Together, both components invited viewers to reflect on memory, place, and the subtle connections woven into everyday environments, while experiencing some during the exhibition.
~

Lâl was our wreathing force behind. Not only she’s contributed the Woven Diary to Proem experience, she also helped us designing our accordion 🪗 memoir postcards and gave us a Kundalini treat in the backyard. Thank you lalo. ♥️

Melike Beşik / Elephant on top, 2024
Plexiglass, steel, acetate, wood

Elephant on Top is a spatio-temporal narrative that centers Melike’s tactile, sensory, mental, and affective recollections of her home on Hobrechtstraße, experienced over a fragmented timeline of four years. It merges a layered spatiality and speculative temporality through Melike’s attunement to the various corners of the house, and whatever belongs to it, including artworks, objects, feelings, conversations, actions, bodies, colors, and textures. This memory work, unconcerned with certainty or accuracy, is an homage to the modes of becoming of and within this space, which has transitioned from an art gallery to a home, and now to a wine bar.

–
🐞Melike is an artist, architectural designer, and researcher. Her work primarily focuses on the politics of space, spatial narration, and micro-narratives, using various mediums such as text, poetry, drawing, collage, and model making. You might also know her from our 5th exhibition at the precious Cukurcuma space, Run of Luck! 🐞

El Méchin-Angot / MOTHER LOST PARADISE, 2024
Visual poem, 5’

“… I was back in my child’s body, pressed against my mother’s skin. I felt again the rays of that warm sun dancing with the freshness of the river. I heard the birds singing around us and the lapping of the water, like a whisper promising that all is well. Still, we knew in those times that this temporary bliss was only one inch away from the world out there.
As I accessed this memory, a concept arose that became so dear to my heart: Reclaiming Paradise…”

Miranda Holmes / a surface is a container for everything that has already happened, 2024
Acrylic on cotton mesh, wire
160 x 180 x 200 cm

Miranda embraces expansive notions of identity and intimacy in her paintings, drawings, and installations. Her work speculates on how we shape one another and the places we inhabit. Using transparent films of paint, Miranda layers the shapes of everyday objects and experiences within figures, entangling them with the cups they hold, the drawers they open, and the shoulders they lean on.

Each work of Miranda’s in the show attended to thresholds of interaction that mark a relationship in flux. Miranda paints the edges between subject matter as active and buzzing. Subjects and objects seep into one another, destabilizing the Self/Other binary for a fluid vision of experience. a surface is a container for everything that has already happened, the hanging installation we see in this album, visualizes the different layers of a painting in space, further exploring the gap between self and other. The installation invited the viewer to walk between the layers, implicating them in the experience of transformation. Miranda’s’ work underlines painting as a site for textures of intimacy to spark, wrestle, grow, or diminish within a single moment.

💜 U.S.based artist Miranda Holmes received her M.F.A. from The Ohio State University in 2022, and in 2017, Holmes was granted a Fulbright Research Scholarship to pursue her practice at UdK. She has had solo shows in Berlin at Vorfluter Projektraum and Raum für Sichtbarkeit. She has participated in multiple group shows, including at Olympia in New York, NY and Curiouser KC in Kansas City, KS. Miranda has received various awards, including the Ellen Stoeckel award to attend the Yale Norfolk School of Art. Some of attended residencies areAnderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, CO and GlogauAIR in Berlin, and in the previous year she was supported by a 10-month DAAD Fellowship in the Arts in Berlin.

Yasmin Alt / Inside the tower of decay, 2024
Tiles, wood, metal, stones, varnish, mushroom
Dimensions variable

The installation brings the correlation between architecture, aesthetics, and space to the surface. It incorporates objects that were milestones in the dawning of humanity like stones to make fire with, and metals that are obtained from the stones. All objects are placed on a carpet of blue ceramic tiles in conjunction with a sculpture inspired by monuments and a wooden object made out of furniture legs. Likewise, there are natural objects like mushrooms and a burned root that suggest a connection to natural forces as well as other destructive forces that shaped our reality. The sinister yet aesthetic atmosphere emerges from the grid of the tiles recalling notions of board games and a performative quality of the objects is embedded in the fragile equilibrium of the layering, stacking, and balancing of the objects.

–

🐚 Yasmin Alt’s lives and works in Berlin. In her minimalist sculptures and objects, Yasmin combines aspects of urban architectural elements from different eras, whereas the single elements function both as solitary objects and are in constant interplay with one other, as they make way to mental spaces that transcend time and history.
Her recent exhibitions include Künstlerhaus Saarbrücken, GalerieETAGE at Museum Reinikendorf, and see you next tuesday in Basel among others.
