I would be nothing without the unwavering support of my parents ✨🔭❤️
My parents are in careers far from academia, PhDs, or astronomy
.. absolutely no ties! yet they never once stopped me from taking the leap of faith and pursuing my love for the stars ✨📡

A career in academia(especially as a first-gen person with no contacts ) is extremely difficult to navigate, oftentimes demanding multiple sacrifices : missed weddings & events & birthdays and what not...but it's not just us as academics who are making those sacrifices, our loved ones are doing it 10 fold behind the curtains.

They're the ones seeing us soar from home & supporting us to break our falls! So I wanted to make this video asking my mum (my ultimate support system) some questions you had about raising a first gen academic & Astrophysicist 🌌

Also as a little appreciation of all she & my baba have done for me.🩷🩷🩷

Let this video be a reminder to check in with your support system - whoever it may be, parents, pets, partners, siblings, friends...they shape your journey and directly or indirectly deserve the credit for your success 🫶🏻✨❤️

I'm a PhD candidate in Molecular Astrophysics, sometimes called Astrochemistry and this is what my work entails :

I use these ultra specialised cryo-vaccum chambers to recreate/simulate the harsh conditions of outer space (especially the 'Interstellar medium' which is the space in between different star systems & is usually filled with dust, gas and a rich chemistry - this is where new stars and planets take birth!) ☀️🪐

⚛️Using this highly specialised equipment, I can study how atoms, molecules and chemicals react with each other in deep space and it helps me get a special "signature" for each type of unique chemical (fun fact : an important & abundant molecule in space is Water, H2O! And has a very unique 'spectral signature' in space. 💧📈)

In this way, by using the specialised chemical signatures I can help guide the James Webb Space telescope (which is where the images are from) on optimum target areas to study various things like : star formation, planet formation, death of stars, and even interaction and production of chemicals necessary for life!! All the way in deep space. Isn't that so cool? 🔭

If you're new here, Hi! I'm Pallavi, I'm a first year PhD student in Astrophysics at the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK! Come with me on this Interstellar adventure that is to be my PhD 🫶🏻✨🌙

I loved all things space & the Universe since I was a little child and wanted to do a PhD in Astronomy since I was like 14...the journey from dreaming to be an astrophysicist, then studying for it and then applying for it all the way to sitting in my own office, I feel beyond grateful.

And that's why even through hesitations I'm choosing to share all parts of my PhD journey with you, almost like a digital diary🩷✨🔭

Imposter syndrome is so common in life but especially so in academia that it deters most people from realising their own internal worth & intellect...this makes it harder to take the first step, to apply, to take the leap of faith & to feel like you deserve your success 🩷✨🫰🏻

That's the reason I wanted to share this with you...
I'm a fully funded PhD student in one of the best labs in the UK for my sub-field of study (astrophysics) and while i try my best to be as honest on my page about my highs and lows, I still don't post about the nights I spent crying, doubting myself and feeling like I didn't deserve to be where I am today, we've all been there 🫶🏻

So this is your reminder : be kind with yourself, and don't compare your journey with someone else's destination, especially in the age of social media!

Goodluck fellow/current PhD aspirants, I'm rooting for you 🩷✨🪄

For the last year and a half, my life was absolutely consumed by spreadsheets, multiple pages of scribbled notes, reminders, advice pieces and most of all a numbing uncertainty. The worst part is feeling not-good-enough after every rejection or silence even though deep down I knew this is exactly how academia works. There were so many moments I thought about giving up & I'm grateful I didn't. 💫

If you are currently staring at an application portal, rewriting your SOP for the 10th time, or dealing with rejections: Please do not stop. Your acceptance only needs to happen ONCE.

I'll do my best to help out & answer (because when I was struggling, I was so grateful for the advice of some wonderful PhD students senior to me and on social media)
