The @coavalancheinfo has issued their first avalanche forecast of the 2026-2027 season! They have also issued a Special Avalanche Advisory for the North and South San Juan Mountains, the La Plata Mountains, the Raggeds, the Ruby Range, and Elk Mountains. A potent winter storm increases avalanche hazard throughout the day Sunday into Monday. Rain, snow, and wind impacts will rapidly change avalanche conditions. Give large, connected slopes in the alpine a large buffer, as avalanches can release naturally, breaking wider and travelling further than expected. #gettheforecast #coavysafety by @friendsofcaic
Widely used, but widely misunderstood. What are test slopes and how should we be using them? In our first Safety Refresh of the season, “Stability & Test Slopes: One Tool to Understand the Snowpack,” Dylan Craaybeek, @coavalancheinfo Central Mountains Backcountry Forecaster, explains how test slopes can provide immediate feedback on avalanche conditions but, when used incorrectly, can create a false sense of security. 🔗Click the link in our bio to read the full article. A good test slope should be steep enough to avalanche, but not large enough to cause serious consequences, with no terrain traps below. The key takeaway: test slopes are much better at revealing instability than guaranteeing stability. This month’s Safety Refresh is supported by @mtnfx_llc, centralizing daily operations for ski patrols, avalanche programs, guiding services, and more. 📷 A common place to find useful test slopes is just above or just below a road. This was a small (about 10 feet tall) slope just below a road in the Elk Mountains. This avalanche was remotely triggered while approaching the slope on December 27, 2021. by @friendsofcaic

New snow has fallen in several parts of Colorado, and people are out enjoying the transition to winter. The new snow has also created fresh avalanche concerns on upper-elevation, wind-drifted slopes facing west, north, and east. This avalanche was triggered on an East facing slope on Mt. Bross. It's time to start thinking about avalanches. Use caution on steep terrain because even shallow snow on grassy slopes, rock slabs, or old snowfields can avalanche. #coavyobs #avalanchesafety #coavalancheinfo #gettheforecast by @friendsofcaic

Thinking back to some crazy conditions from last winter has me excited for the Colorado Snow and Avalanche Workshop (CSAW) next Friday (Oct 16) in Breckenridge, Colorado with @coavalancheinfo ❄️ This is a unique event each fall with a variety of presentations this year including group dynamics in the field, UAVs in avalanche and SAR work, the highway forecasting program, managing risk in avalanche terrain, meteorologist’s perspective of El Niño, classifying avalanche size, and more🤯🤯 It would be AWESOME to have more motorized snow enthusiasts involved and attend the event. Lots of great information whether you’re a full blown ❄️🤓, just the average person that loves being on the snow and has interest in avalanche safety, and everything in between. Event runs from 8 am through 4 pm followed by happy hour. You can get tickets at the link in my bio. Hope to see you there! by @friendsofcaic
