Ring the alarm! 🚨🚨🚨
It’s BANNED BOOKS WEEK!

This is my favorite poster of the series from @americanlibraryassociation for Banned Books Week. Here are FIVE things you can do to support:

1. 📖 Read a banned or challenged book. Pick one you’ve never read or revisit an old favorite.

2. 📸 Post what you’re reading. Share a photo and tell your friends why the freedom to read matters to you.

3. 🏛️ Support your local library. Visit, attend a program, check out books, and thank your library staff.

4. 🗣️ Speak up for the freedom to read. Learn what’s happening in your community and let local decision-makers know that access to books matters.

5. 🤝 Share RELIABLE resources. Help friends understand the difference between choosing what you or your family reads and restricting what everyone else can access.

As I ♥️ all the posts from @librarycongress National Book Festival posts and cry 😭 because I’m home sick 😷 for the 3rd day in a row…I’ve finished my second book of the weekend Everybody Loses by Danny Funt.

I picked this up at @pgcmls via @libby.app after hearing the author interview on @npr Book of the Day podcast.

It’s about the history and onslaught of sports betting in the United States.

Takeaways:

✅ States rushed into sports betting without listening or learning from the pitfalls the UK had already experienced in sports betting after 50 years (surprise! We haven’t listened to them in 250 years! 🇬🇧 )

✅ The house doesn’t always win. The 2 major firms have most of the market share and many other sports betting firms have failed and/or closed.

✅ The US will never scale back on taxes to these greedy companies. Why? They are making too much money off YOU gambling at a loss.

✅ Children are terribly at risk for becoming addicted to gambling.

✅ When state legislators were told they should be spending about $7.5 Million on gambling prevention, health care and recovery for their constituents…they laughed.

Bottom line: don’t gamble. It’s not worth it and you can’t win.

Latest read I just finished. For the second time actually. Read this back in 2021 via a Libby ebook check out. But it’s the kind of book that’s so good and filled with such great history that I needed it in my personal library.

This tells the story of the 1986 fire that destroyed over 400,000 books in the Central Library of Los Angeles. 40 years ago this year. Heartbreaking💔 yes. A mystery of who did it. The fascinating history of the @lapubliclibrary system from its inception in 1872.

Recommend this to anyone who is interested in an #MLIS degree, loves mysteries, loves history or library lore.

Happy Weekend Reading!

The Washington @nationals and @pgcmls are partnering to present “Summer Prince George’s,” (SPG) a program for all ages that runs from May 19 through August 14.

More than a traditional summer reading program, SPG encourages children, teens, and adults to read 30 minutes each day, attend library programs, explore the physical collection of materials as well as a wide range of streaming movies and music in the 85+ online library resources.

Get your kids, teens and book clubs ready!

Thanks to our neighboring county friends at @aacpl I’ve been absorbed in the 70s/80s graffiti art and rap scene of NYC courtesy of an amazing story told by @fab5freddy! This has been a great read and I love the partnership he had with Jean Michel Basquiat! by @friendsuml
