And now, we celebrate Zoo Science alumni and former Zoo Science Club President, Abigail Wiiest!

As a relief keeper I learn multiple routines, I’m currently trained on the Hoofstock routine (Przewalski’s Horses, Bactrian Camel, Bighorn Sheep, Addax, African Crowned Crane, Stanley Crane) and I will be learning a new routine soon. My job responsibilities include daily servicing such as feeding, cleaning, enrichment, administering medications, and detailed record keeping.

Being in the Zoo Science program helped me make connections with zoo professionals and learn specific husbandry skills for various taxa. Being involved in the Zoo Science Club helped me develop leadership and teamwork skills. by @friendszsc

On October 4, we celebrate International Zookeeper Day! Please join us in celebrating present and future keepers!

I helped facilitate the interactions between the guests and some of the animals in the designated spaces, such as the giraffe feeding station, the petting zoo, and the stingray cove! I made sure people were following rules and also monitored the animal’s behaviors to ensure a fun and safe interaction with the guests. The Zoo Science major/club helped me prepare for this job by getting me used to public speaking and interpreting basic animal behavior, as well as giving me the tools to do good during the interview!

Hi I’m Sean DePaola, this summer I was an intern at the Great Bend Brit-Spaugh Zoo!!! During the internship I helped with everything from the animals, raptor rehab, educational programs, summer camp, and just regular maintenance. My Zoo Science major helped me by understanding the key procedures of a zookeeper and how to work as a team. While the Zoo Science Club helped me learn how to keep people engaged in large groups.

Hello! My name is Grace Paul and over the summer I had the amazing chance to work with Julie Rabalais in For the Birds of Acadiana. @forthebirdsofacadiana is a non-profit organization that focuses on intaking songbirds, waterfowl, and pigeons/doves native to south Louisiana. Thanks to the Zoo Science program at Friends, I went in with the necessary education to understanding the fundamentals about managing wild animals and providing them with proper nutrition and care.

As a carnivore intern I helped provide daily care/husbandry to 25 cheetahs, 5 lions, 5 bears, 3 Amur tigers, 2 painted dogs, and 4 red wolves. The Zoo Science program helped me foster zoo keeping skills prior to my internship, therefore I was able to get the most out of my time. If it wasn’t for Friends I would not have the social network that I do now, that has allowed me to gain such valuable experience.

As a part-time elephant keeper, I am part of an amazing team in which I assist in diet preparation, daily cleaning, and operation of machinery that helps us both clean and feed the elephants during our daily routine. I still have so much to learn from by @friendszsc

The Zoo Science Club recently had the privilege to help with celebrating Callee, @sedgwickcountyzoo’s bull African Elephant! He turned 26 and had a MARVEL-ous day (pun credits to a keeper!) with his superhero themed enrichment.

Thank you to everyone who painted for him, and EXTRA big thank you to the Elephant keepers at SCZ for making this all possible! We loved helping add to the enrichment.
