It takes chutzpah to write an alternative history about the origin of Elvis Presley’s iconic white jumpsuit—but @bloatedinvegas has plenty to spare… šŸ•ŗ

In the heart of NYC’s Lower East Side, we meet Moishe: a gifted Jewish tailor whose compulsion to critique everyone’s clothes gets him into trouble as often as it brings him business. From neighbours to the local rabbi, nobody is spared a Law Roach-level read… šŸ’…šŸ¾

After giving THE Elvis Presley unsolicited style advice outside a concert, Moishe finds himself on a private jet to Las Vegas, newly minted as the King’s fashion designer & righthand man. Rising to the top together, they indulge in all that sin city has to offer— but when Elvis’s jumpsuit rips on stage, so does their relationship, sending these once-upon-a-time besties spiralling out of control…

If you can appreciate a chain stitch the way Miranda Priestly can cerulean, then this rhinestone-studded dramedy is a perfect fit. But it’s also an emotionally resonant tale of friendship, roots and community…

Jason Cohen (@ohyesjayco) gives a zesty performance as both Moishe and the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, switching between them with needlepoint precision. Impersonating Elvis without reducing him to caricature is no small feat, but Cohen finds the troubled man inside the icon, making both characters equally compelling…

Moishe initially sails close to becoming a pastiche of the familiar Jewish ā€˜old country’ stereotypes. As the play settles, however, its humour grows gentler, his characterisation richer— and who doesn’t want to see Fiddler on the Roof’s Tevye transported to the 1970s?

Co-creator @michaelschiralli’s simple set up of a desk, a chair, plus deft sound and lighting, captures the vivid excesses of Vegas. Here we see Elvis lose himself in stardom, i.e. the icon Moishe has helped construct. The fallout from this storm leaves us questioning how we measure success — and what we’re willing to sacrifice in pursuit of it…

Gloriously untrue yet emotionally sincere, this is the ahistorical fashionista fairytale we didn’t know we needed. šŸ«°āœ‚ļø5/5

As though #EverythingIsCake, @exitstrategy_’s How to Win a Gameshow is a deceptively ingenious, yummy morsel of interactive theatre. Cheerfully sinister, it meditates on power, surveillance & obedience—and we’re kinda obsessed… šŸ˜

First, smile, cuties—cause we’re all on camera… šŸ“¹ The camcorder lenses seem to focus on Graham, but signs confirm we’re all under scrutiny. Onscreen, we sit behind him: the spectators, jury and lab rats within this panopticon. It’s giving The Truman Show — but are we the entertained or the entertainment?

A blue-haired, benevolent dictator of a host issues instructions in a soothing voice that makes every off-kilter request sound safe, even as Graham’s strained smile & desperate need for approval hint otherwise. He competes against volunteers in mini-games with clear rules but obscure implications. Why must we repeat Graham’s personal affirmations? Answer impossible questions about his childhood? Why may winners take only certain sweets as rewards—no, not that one… šŸ¬

Graham is the reigning champ, but unlike your grandma’s Jeopardy!, it’s not clear he’ll ever leave to enjoy the honour. His version of a victory lap is permission to sing #RhinestoneCowboy — a beautiful moment of pure joy made strange by the host’s irritation. Every. Single. Detail is painstakingly abnormal…

Exit Strategy engineers ā€œsafe discomfortā€ with remarkable precision. Through overt invitations, implied cajoling and loaded silences, the games teach us to obey & perform as required. It’s Squid Game-flavoured, baited with an elusive cash prize. In this economy, maybe that’s all it takes to make a crowd pliable… 😭

From agility tests to the world’s longest questionnaire (delivered by a host with a Band-Aid in his Afro, let’s not question it) this spectacle becomes a modern Stanford Prison Experiment, demonstrating that attention + approval + prizes = compliance. By the final challenge, we understand what the system wants without being told. Control is complete when its subjects enforce the rules themselves… šŸ™Š

Profoundly brilliant and hilariously unsettling, we know we’re being manipulated, and yet we enthusiastically consent. 5/5 #theatre #interactive #fringe taken in Edinburgh Festival Fringe by @fringebiscuitmagazine

Welcome to enlightenment, babes šŸ§˜ā€ā™‚ļø Yoga, meditation & America’s decline are all on the menu as @taooflloyd checks us into a luxury wellness retreat…

(Re)meet Lloyd Dobler, the boombox-toting romantic from Say Anything, now a Gen-X idealist turned army vet, protestor, podcaster & zen-punk dissident. Dennis Trainor Jr. brings a cynical wit to this (technically) fanfic, railing against Trump, MAGA, capitalism, neoliberalism & militarism with podcast-bro self-assuredness… šŸŽ¤

Subbing for Deepak Chopra & decked out in not-quite military fatigues, Lloyd promises to upend our privileged, green juice & crypto-fuelled enclave with a ā€œspiritual Molotov cocktailā€ šŸ¤” Ambiguous. Alarming. But we absolutely want to know more…

Going full revolutionary manifesto, Trainor unloads a verbal torrent laced with fiery one-liners. But listen closely & you begin to realise Lloyd is excellent at rattling the ideological bars of his cage. Jailbreak is another story…

That tension spikes as his keynote slips into an anecdote about a prior elite gathering. Invited by his former high-school sweetheart to provide a dissenting voice, Lloyd arrives with something rather more disruptive in mind: a gun. Oh, hello Chekhov… šŸ‘€

We’re reminded of #TaxiDriver’s Travis Bickle… but the expected explosion of rage never comes. Lloyd has already travelled from youthful idealism to post-9/11, Occupy Wall Street & January 6th disillusionment; now even his fantasy of political violence collapses into impotence…

There’s irony everywhere. Instead of disrupting the status quo, Lloyd has become part of the programme. The counterculture radical has been commodified. Even Taoism feels like an accessory, ā€œduct-tapedā€ onto American sensibilities…

Guy Masterson’s unfussy direction leaves Trainor to hold the room, and he does. Funny, rapid-fire & in love with his own words, Lloyd is compelling & maddening. He rages eloquently against what America has become—but it seems rhetoric is all he has…

It culminates in a sing-along: Woody Guthrie’s ā€˜This Land Is Your Land’. The song rings strangely hollow yet hopeful—we’re denied resolution & left wondering: is this defeat or a rallying cry? 4/5 taken in Edinburgh Festival Fringe by @fringebiscuitmagazine
