Because women can be heroes too… πŸ¦β€πŸ”₯

Synopsis: The Women is a historical fiction novel following Frankie, a 20-year-old young woman who enlists in the Vietnam War as a nurse. The book tells the story of her life before, during, and after the war, while giving a special place and recognition to all the women who have been forgotten by history.

My thoughts:
Disclaimer: I’m not an expert on the Vietnam War, so my opinion will be based solely on the novel itself and not on its historical accuracy, although I do recognize how important that aspect is.
There are books that make you feel proud to be a woman, and this is one of them. It’s a story that moves quickly, especially during the first half, almost mirroring the way time seems to pass during moments of adrenaline, stress, and war. But when we reach the aftermath, Kristin Hannah’s portrayal of feelings of restlessness, anguish, anger, and hopelessness beautifully reflects the emotional turmoil of PTSD and the way it can destroy a life in its wake.
Frankie is a complicated character, but one thing I appreciated was that many of the things that happened to her were the result of her own choices and actions, rather than simply being written off as β€œbad luck” or fate. Her friendships were my favorite part of the story. I only wish we had gotten to know her friends more deeply.
The love story was a very honest reflection of how, sometimes, love simply cannot save us, and how toxic love can pull us deeper and deeper into something that becomes almost as difficult to leave as it is to stay in.
I think the ending Frankie was given, healing and helping others heal, not only physically but emotionally as well, was a beautiful reflection of her growth as a woman.
The sisterhood portrayed throughout the book was one of my favorite aspects, and I believe it’s important to read books written by women. We need to tell our stories, raise our voices, and claim our place in the world. We should never limit ourselves.
This book reminded me that we can always begin again, over and over, and become a better version of ourselves; that healing takes time; and and that maybe there won’t be an afterwards. by @from.ashes.to.pages

Because sometimes the past cannot be forgotten…

Synopsis:
A Japanese classic published in 1914, it tells the story of the relationship between a young university student and his β€œSensei,” exploring themes such as moral guilt, remorse, love, and the idea that behind every person there is a story waiting to be told.

Review:
It felt like having your heart broken with warmth and love. An absolutely heartbreaking book, but in the most beautiful way possible. From their first encounter to his final testament, the author gives you small clues about what might happen and how, sometimes, the shadows of our past can cloud even our present.
After finishing it, I understood why it is considered a classic of Japanese literature and why it is recommended that everyone read it. Sometimes, we have to learn through other people’s experiences lessons that are impossible to forget, always through empathy and understanding. Likewise, it is never a bad idea to remember the importance of forgiveness, not only toward others, but also toward ourselves.
The sense of guilt throughout the book makes you feel it as if it were your own, waiting for that final sense of relief to finally arrive. Although I would have liked Sensei to have had a different ending, I completely understand why the author gave him that one. The only thing I would have liked a little more of was having more conversations between Sensei and the student. I would have loved to hear more of their reflections on life.
Lastly, as a future psychologist, I admire the capacity for self-reflection and awareness that permeates the book. Being able to look back on our own story and guide someone else through the lessons we have learned from our experiences is one of the most beautiful gifts in life. by @from.ashes.to.pages

If you could write a letter to your ex, what would you tell them?
  Synopsis:
The book consists of the letter Oscar Wilde wrote to his former lover during his imprisonment.
 My thoughts:
Oscar Wilde captivates the reader with a language and prose that are both beautiful and deeply moving. Through his writing, he conveys anger, regret, love, and acceptance with such clarity and emotional depth that you feel as though you are witnessing his most intimate memories and emotions firsthand.
At the same time, the letter offers a glimpse into the social norms, prejudices, and values of the time. Throughout it, Wilde journeys from the heights of success and the most profound expressions of love to the depths of suffering and despair, ultimately embracing experiences and insights that his previous life had never allowed him to discover.
Another aspect I deeply appreciated was the way Wilde portrays life in prison and reflects on his experience there. It is incredibly powerful to read these thoughts knowing that the letter itself was written from within its walls. I especially admired the humanity with which he writes about his fellow prisoners, the prison guards, and even the prison itself, though the latter is naturally depicted through a much darker lens.
I thought it was a truly beautiful book. It can be a little slow at times, but it is absolutely worth reading. I would also recommend reading Wilde’s biography and his other letters alongside it, as they provide a much richer understanding of both the book and the extraordinary life behind it. by @from.ashes.to.pages
