Birth Story: Part 2 – Meeting Leo

After Leo was repositioned, his head became visible and descended well. Unfortunately, my cervix had become swollen from the prolonged labour and despite strong contractions, I was unable to dilate beyond 7cm.

The team considered using syntocinon (oxytocin) to strengthen my contractions and help me reach full dilation, however Leo’s heart rate was already elevated, so it was decided that proceeding with a caesarean section was the safest option for both of us.

After all those hours of labour, hearing that I needed a caesarean was incredibly difficult. I had already come so far and felt disappointed that things hadn’t gone as I had hoped.

I was also scared and anxious going into surgery because I wasn’t mentally prepared for it. Everything had changed so quickly. Between the nerves and the effects of the epidural, I was shaking uncontrollably on the operating table. It felt overwhelming, and in that moment I was terrified.

Through every contraction, every decision, every setback and every fear, Daniel never left my side. He supported me through all 22 hours of labour and right into the operating theatre. I genuinely don’t know how I would have gotten through it without him, and I will always be grateful for the love and strength he gave me when I needed it most. God gave me the perfect husband for me and I’m eternally thankful.

During the caesarean, forceps were required to assist with delivering Leo’s head. Then came the moment we had been waiting for.

When Leo was born, there was a brief moment where he didn’t cry straight away. It felt like time stood still as we waited to hear him. But the instant I saw him, all of the fear, anxiety, disappointment and exhaustion disappeared. Nothing else mattered anymore.

And then we heard his cry.

After 22 hours of labour, our beautiful son, Leonardo Camilo Lopez Barnetson, arrived on 6 June 2026 at 7:00pm weighing 3.26kg.

Every challenge, every painful moment was worth it. The second I saw him, I knew I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

He is more perfect than I could have ever imagined, and he has been an absolute angel ever since. 🤍 by @fromangielu

Birth Story: Part 1 – Labour

My waters ruptured at 8:00pm on Friday, and I went into labour around 8:45pm. Despite being in active labour, I only dilated from 3cm to 4cm over the first four hours.

I laboured for a total of 22 hours, including 18 hours of active labour. Throughout labour, Leo’s head remained very low in my pelvis, but he was in an occiput posterior (“sunny side up”) position. This caused intense back and pelvic pressure and gave me a strong urge to push, but much of that pressure was directed towards my rectum rather than helping my cervix dilate.

The pain was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I had hoped to labour without an epidural and kept pushing through, believing I could do it. Eventually, after many hours of labour and little progress, I chose to have an epidural.

One of the reasons I was so upset about needing it was because I really don’t like the feeling of being numb or not having full control of my body. It wasn’t part of the birth experience I had hoped for, and making that decision was emotionally difficult for me. Even now, I truly believe that if Leo had been in the right position from the beginning, I could have birthed him naturally without an epidural as I pushed myself for 18 hours without it.

Once the epidural was in place, the midwives and obstetric team were able to help reposition Leo. Thankfully, he rotated into a more favourable position and his head descended well.

At that point, I felt hopeful that we were finally getting close to meeting our little boy.
