Saudade is a word in Portuguese that describes the conflicting emotions of when you lose something or someone. It’s the aching feeling of loss combined with the happiness of good memories. It’s the certainty that it was good, and it’s knowing that you’ll treasure those moments and the people you lived them with forever. It hurts and heals at the same time. Five years ago I was afraid, but I went anyway. And UCSB changed my life completely. I’ve met people from all over the world, and with them I’ve met the best versions of myself. I’ve made lifelong friendships. And when I heard from my friends and my students about the impact I’ve made in their lives, my only thought was that it’s entirely the other way around. I’ll never forget you. I’m taking y’all, UCSB and the whole dam* Santa Barbara with me wherever I go from here.
