"Historic Rock Ford observed Lafayette Day on Monday in remembrance of Lafayette’s July 1825 visit to the daughter of Gen. Edward Hand. Hand, a physician who also became a brigadier general in the U.S. military, commanded a light-infantry brigade under Lafayette in the war. Monday’s event included the arrival of a historical interpreter portraying Lafayette — being greeted in his carriage under a recreation of an 1825 triumphal arch — along with fife-and-drum performances, historical presentations, reenactors, music, children’s activities and more.
The Lafayette200 tour of 24 U.S. states, mirroring Lafayette’s 1825 visit, moves on to Maryland after today’s Lancaster County sendoff ceremony at Drumore Estate in Pequea."

How long has it been now? One year? Two? I have lost track.
Yep, we ended up taking a family field trip back to @colonialwmsburg again this year. What can I say? We are obsessed - especially my youngest.

There was a recent study showing that only 13% of public educated 8th graders here in America actually know their American history- 13%!!!! How is that even possible?!

Well, not my children.

Thanks to amazing people like Mark (pictured here with F) depicting Lafayette and bringing him to life in such a way that my son is head over heels with history. F literally spends hours each day reading and learning all he can about Lafayette and the founding of our country. I couldn't be prouder of him. The rest of my children are just as enthusiastic, and we all just can't get enough. In fact, 3 of my children along with myself just got accepted into our local heritage society's apprenticeship program. We will get the honor to learn and master some of the skills of the colonial time period while sharing and reenacting them with others (like our own little local Williamsburg). We are looking forward to getting started soon. I will be spinning while C will be learning lacemaking, L- blacksmithing and F - pottery. You all know how much I love old fashioned skills, so I am over the moon!

Hey everyone! Long time no see - I know. I am soaking in every moment I can with my oldest before she leaves us so I haven't been able to make it to this space nor online in general.

Recently we went back to our old stomping grounds in Virginia for a history fieldtrip/road trip/farewell to my oldest tour and we had the pleasure of meeting up with Ron and Justine from our favorite YouTube channel Early American. They have inspired us so much with our woodstove cooking and using historical recipes! Plus they are the sweetest people. ❤️ by @frontierdreams

This Advent is flying by much too fast. It will be my last advent with all my children. 😭 my eldest will be living out her dream of becoming a religious (nun) next autumn. I am so happy for her but heartbroken for myself. I am blessed to call her one of my best friends and thinking of life without her is hard to imagine. ❤

Well friends, the day has come.

I can't seem to gather my thoughts or words so please forgive me. I don't think I could ever articulate just how much your kindness and encouragement have meant to my family and I all these years through the blog and IG. I hope I returned the favor and encouraged you on your path.

Keep shining your light and making this world a better place one family at a time.

I look forward to "Seeing" you all again in the near future after our internet-free experiment but also understand if you move on.

**I have been trying my hardest to respond to all your messages in my DM box and will continue to do so to the best of my ability until we officially disconnect Saturday night. Please, please do not take it personally if I run out of time and do not respond. Know that I appreciate what you said and will carry it with me! If I don't respond now I will when I come back 🙂

I love it when natural homemade products not only work beautifully but bring pleasure to your sense of smell and are also pleasing to the eye. This jar you see here has to sit for about 4 weeks and I won't mind seeing it every day at all. We have been making our own cleaning solution from citrus peels and vinegar for years now but my friend Allyson @therootedfolk shared an addition I never thought to make - pine needles!

I can't believe we are just a few days from our internet-free/off-grid challenge beginning! I thought this week would be full of panic as I try to remember anything I might need off the internet before it is gone but I have to say - I feel nothing but peace and excitement.

One aspect I hadn't thought of previously is the comparison trap I absolutely fall into on here. I try my hardest not to but I do it all the time. With the absence of social media in my life I won't have that hanging over me. How wonderfully freeing that sounds. I am so ready for this!!!

Today is the last day of our Hänsel and Gretel fairytale week and I couldn't resist sharing these cinnamon salt dough gingerbread ornaments the kids and I made this week. Our entire home smells like cinnamon rolls 24/7 with these.

Old fashioned on purpose. That is me in every way possible - the way I dress, live, think... I seek out what others may see as hard and gritty instead of just doing what everyone else does. Why? Because it is just how I am wired *but* it also gives me the purpose I yearn for, especially as my babies grow older and need me less 🥺

To me, seasonal eating ties in with this lifestyle I chose. Making Pennsylvania Dutch Baby pancakes for a winter breakfast using apples from our neighbors stored in our root cellar and water-glassed eggs we preserved this spring during the height of our chickens' egg production brings me so much joy.

Did you know eggs are seasonal, too? I didn't know this myself until we started researching permaculture farming and got chickens of our own. You can get chickens to lay year-round with electric lights and heaters (and I'm not saying you absolutely shouldn't) but we would rather stick with the way nature intended for the health of our chickens and ourselves.

On a side note - when you have a vision in your head for a photo that involves yourself but don't own a tripod, your teenage daughter can wear your clothes and pose in your place 🥰
