Something’s in the post. ✉️

We’re starting something a little old-fashioned: SLOW Footprints ‘Snapshot’, a printed newsletter from the Floating Stories Lab, sent by post.

Inside the envelope: an A4 doubled sided letter from the Breton coast, citizen science and boat build news, a riso-printed postcard stamped by an artist, and a small sheet of custom-made stickers.

It’s our thank-you to members who support us at the €50 and €150 tiers.

The first issue goes out this autumn.

Want one in your letterbox? Become a member through the link in bio.

Already a member on one of those tiers? Check your inbox: we need your postal address.

Spotted an abandoned boat on your coast? Help us put it on the map.

Hundreds of thousands of end-of-life boats are left to rot in harbours, estuaries and on beaches. As they break down, they shed fibreglass, microplastics and toxic antifouling paint into the sea and the food chain. But no one knows exactly where they are, or how many there are.

That’s where you come in.

ReTISS (Regenerative Tides: Sailing for Solutions) is our citizen science project and an endorsed UN Ocean Decade Action. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can take part from their own coastline. All you need is a smartphone and 20–30 minutes.

Swipe through the guide:
→ Stay safe
→ Look around
→ Identify the vessel
→ Assess its condition
→ Search the ground for debris
→ Observe wildlife and plants

Then upload your observations to the Bad Boats Survey. Link in bio. Entries are anonymous.

So far, 37 citizen scientists have mapped 86 boats in France, the UK and Portugal. Let’s see how far this map can go.

Save this post for your next coastal walk, and share it with someone who lives by the sea.

Thank you to everyone who came to visit our booth at @theoceanrace in Lorient over the past five days, and to our amazing FSL members who jumped at the call to volunteer.

Across Europe alone, hundreds of thousands of boats are reaching their end-of-life with no waste management plan in place. Most of those are left abandoned to degrade in marinas, on moorings, along our estuary shorelines, on land, or sunken offshore, causing an overlooked, mass pollution crisis.

At FSL we have engaged citizen scientists in mapping these ‘Bad Boats’ across Brittany, Isle of Wight, and Portugal, and college students have analyzed the impacts on marine life - fiberglass, plastics and paint flakes were found in every sample of mussels and oysters collected from wild populations alongside boat cemeteries and mooring sites.

We’ve also gathered creative partitioners across disciplines to disseminate the research, and our roving art x science exhibition ‘The Table of Curiosity’ was on display all week in Lorient.

Now with the attention of sailors, scientists, boat builders, policymakers and the general public, we hope we can all come together to dialogue and action meaningful change. The industry must move beyond greenwashing and check box sustainability towards regenerative solutions. The data is there, let’s make positive changes for future generations 💙⛵️🌊 taken in Lorient la Base by @fslcitizenscience

Our ReTISS citizen science initiative is now incorporated into undergraduate creative curriculum at SAE University Australia.

COEXISTENCE is a short film by Lola Stokes and Molly Marston, encouraging surfers to be more aware of the impact surf craft can have on nature and human health.

With music by Thomas Lynch and Jemma Gardner.

Regenerative Tides: Sailing for Solutions (ReTISS) is a UN Ocean Decade-endorsed citizen science initiative lead by the Floating Stories Lab engaging coastal communities in data collection, creative practice, and policy advocacy surrounding the impact of end-of-life boats (and other marine craft) on aquatic ecosystems.

Our first public showing of FSL x University of Brighton’s Table of Curiosity took place at a local ocean festival in Audierne, Brittany, over the weekend.

This roving art x science exhibition explores the impacts of abandoned boats on marine ecosystems, co-created by a collective of creative practitioners who gathered for a weeklong residency in Plouhinec (29) in June.

The table and artifacts grew strong interest from folks visiting the festival - locals, traveling visitors, marine enthusiasts and government officials.

A huge thanks to our members and volunteers for helping set up and run the booth @ulisse.catamaran @redseal.sailing @marjolaineabalea @anschela @bailey_mull and to the local community of communes for hosting us at the festival @capsizun_pointeduraz

The next showing of the exhibition will be at @theoceanrace Atlantic park city in Lorient, September 9-13. You’ll find us in the Ocean Literacy Hub Tent.

Guess the question 💩

I asked people from two nature-loving communities the same question. This is what they have to say 🤸🏾

We built the Table of Curiosity collectively during our weeklong ReTISS Citizen Science Creative Residency - researchers, designers, illustrators, photographers and citizen scientists working side by side.

Because no single discipline can hold what an abandoned boat asks: what happens to material that never fully biodegrades, and what does a community owe the water in return?

The table is a mobile site of memory, evidence, and quiet accountability - one estuary’s decay, carried into new public spaces, asking each audience to sit with what we leave behind in the water.

Book the table for your ocean/science events and conferences 🙌🏼💙

ReTISS citizen science creative residency participant @marjolaineabalea testing cyanotypes reflecting fiberglass pollution from end-of-life boats. In the end Marjolaine conducted her process in the field at the Goyen River Boat Cemetery, then collaborated with local artist Maud Plantec to create a collection of postcards sharing a conversation story between decaying boats and the neighboring mussels who ingest their debris.

Our collective works will be shared as the roving exhibition booth and ‘Table of Curiosity’ in upcoming events, festivals and conferences across Brittany over the summer.
