Winter Sunrise on Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, California

Sometimes good light and and unpredictable weather come together for a truly special photograph, a “dynamic landscape” to quote Galen Rowell. I caught this on my second sunrise at Mount Tamalpais, the day after a large winter storm. Sunrise itself was nothing too special, as the sun was covered by clouds that had not yet cleared. Some other clouds crested over the Marin foothills maybe 15-30 minutes after the sun came up, and they caught some of the most beautiful morning light that I have ever seen in the Bay Area. At the time I was still learning how to shoot Fuji Velvia, and most of my exposures of sunrise that morning were hilariously underexposed. However, this shot turned out to be one of the few that I exposed well, and I’m quite thankful for that bit of serendipitous timing.

My new book Coming Home: A Photographer’s Journey through the Sierra Nevada and my 2025 Portfolio Calendar are both available for preorder until November 15! Both are available through a link in my bio.

This hardcover photo book is the culmination of almost four years of work as I made almost thirty visits to the Sierra Nevada. I’ve handpicked 76 photos that I feel best depict this area of California that I love.

I am particularly proud of this year’s portfolio calendar. The photo selection process was more difficult than ever, as there were multiple solid contenders that I wished I could have included.

If you combine both a copy of the book and the calendar with your purchase, you can receive 10% off your order with code “COMINGHOME.”

Special thanks to @charm_city_gal for both lending me her digital kit to take this picture and for helping me light paint the falls with her headlamp. This photo would not have been possible without her!

“Spade, we’ve got a 4,000-plus tree with the center present!” shouted Edmund Schulman to his colleague M.E. Cooley. Schulman, a dendrochronologist at the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona, had spent two decades conducting field work as part of his search for the world’s oldest trees. His pursuit had brought him to the remote White Mountains of California, home of several groves of Great Basin Bristlecone Pines.

I write about Edmund Schulman’s discovery of the oldest trees in the world, how they changed our understanding of climate and history, as well as my own trips to the White Mountains to photograph them, in my newest blog post, “Living Ruins.” You can find a link to it in my bio.

This photo might be one of my favorites from the trips. I waited here for the clouds above to move just enough so that the sun illuminated the upper branches of this dead bristlecone pine. Swipe to see the uncropped version.

These two photos were taken less than a day apart from each other. It was stunning to see how different it felt with a dusting of snow and fog after a storm.

After my Yosemite trip, I drove a few hours to Big Sur in search of better weather. I lucked out with maybe 15 minutes or so of good light before the clouds rolled in once again.
