We're excited to welcome Martin Katz to FSU for his upcoming masterclasses, this Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026 at 2:30 pm in the Opperman Music Hall and this Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026 at 10:00 am in the Longmire Recital Hall.

One of the world’s busiest collaborators, Martin Katz has been dubbed “The gold standard of collaborative pianists today,” by the NY Times. He has been in constant demand by the world’s most celebrated vocal soloists for more than four decades, and has appeared and recorded regularly with Marilyn Horne, Frederica von Stade, Karita Mattila, Samuel Ramey, David Daniels, Lawrence Brownlee, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Kathleen Battle…..to name just a few. Season after season, musical capitals have figured prominently in his performance schedule.

A native of Los Angeles, his piano studies began at the age of five. He attended the University of Southern California and studied accompanying with its pioneer teacher, Gwendolyn Koldofsky. To fulfill his military service obligation, after graduating he served as pianist for the U.S.Army Chorus in Washington for three years. It was at this time that his professional career began in earnest.

Recently conducting has begun to play a more significant role in his career. He has partnered many of his regular soloists on the podium, and has been pleased to lead several staged productions for U-M’s Opera Theatre, The Music Academy of the West, and San Francisco Opera’s prestigious Merola program.

The profile of Martin Katz is completed with his commitment to teaching. Since 1984 he has chaired the program in collaborative piano for the University of Michigan’s music school. He has been a pivotal figure in the training of countless young artists, both singers and pianists for more than thirty years now. The U-M has recognized this by awarding him two named professorships. In addition to his teaching there, he is a frequent guest at schools and programs in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Mr. Katz is the author of a comprehensive guide to accompanying, widely regarded as the seminal work on the subject: The Complete Collaborator, published by Oxford University Press. by @fsu_voice
