Ranthal Toddy Lounge
Near Athirampuzha,Ettumanoor-Neendoor Rd
Mob:+919746071969,+919447840066
.
The charm of Kerala toddy shops isn’t just about the drink. It’s about atmosphere, rhythm, food, memory, and a very specific kind of social life that has survived modernization.
Toddy is a lightly fermented sap tapped from coconut or palm trees. In Kerala, traditional toddy shops — often called kallu shaap — became community spaces where fishermen, laborers, office workers, travelers, and artists could all sit at neighboring tables.

A classic toddy shop experience often includes:

* Wooden benches and simple interiors
* Banana-leaf-lined plates
* Loud conversations in Malayalam
* Fresh seafood cooked with intense spice and coconut
* Toddy served in glass bottles or steel tumblers
* Music from old Malayalam films in the background
* The smell of fried pearl spot fish, curry leaves, and toddy fermentation mixing in the air

It feels deeply local and unpolished in the best possible way.
The food is half the story

The cuisine is legendary. Many people visit toddy shops mainly for the food.

Popular dishes include:

* Karimeen fry (pearl spot fish)
* Duck roast
* Tapioca with spicy fish curry
* Crab roast
* Beef fry with coconut slices
* Chemmeen (prawn) roast
* Clams stir-fried with shallots and curry leaves

The cooking style is usually bold:

* black pepper
* red chili
* coconut oil
* roasted spices
* smoky clay-pot gravies

The food is designed to pair with toddy’s slightly sour, yeasty taste.

The beauty of Alappuzha Beach in the evening lies in its peaceful blend of sea, sky, and Kerala’s natural charm.
As the sun begins to set, the sky slowly turns shades of gold, orange, pink, and purple, while the Arabian Sea reflects the fading light. The sound of the waves creates a calming rhythm, and the cool sea breeze makes the atmosphere especially pleasant.
People gather along the shore—some walking on the sand, children playing, and others simply sitting quietly and watching the sunset
.
.
Alappuzha Beach, also known as Alleppey Beach, is one of Kerala’s most charming coastal destinations. It is loved for its golden sands, swaying palms, cool sea breeze, and beautiful sunsets.

One of its most distinctive features is the old Alappuzha pier, which stretches into the Arabian Sea and adds a nostalgic character to the shoreline. Walking along the beach in the evening, with the sound of waves and the changing colors of the sky, creates a peaceful and memorable atmosphere.

St. Mary’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Basilica, Champakulam

Kalloorkad St. Mary’s Syro Malabar Catholic Basilica, Champakulam — popularly called Champakulam Valia Palli or Kalloorkad Marth Maryam Church — is one of the historic Syrian Christian churches of Kerala. It stands at Champakulam in Alappuzha district, on the banks of the Pamba River, and belongs to the Syro-Malabar Church under the Archeparchy of Changanacherry.
.
.
1. Ancient history

The church is traditionally dated to AD 427, and local and church histories regard it as one of the oldest Christian churches in India. It is traditionally associated with the early St. Thomas Christian community and was historically connected with Niranam Church. Because the traditional foundation date is very early, it is worth distinguishing tradition from securely dated physical evidence: the church has undergone rebuilding and alteration over the centuries.

Champakulam became particularly important as a mother church (Ammappalli) for Syrian Christian communities in the wider Central Travancore region.
2. The famous ancient rock cross

One of the most significant objects on the church premises is its open-air stone cross, commonly known as the Champakulam Rock Cross.

An inscription associated with the cross provides evidence for its presence by AD 1151, making it an especially important surviving monument for the history of Christianity in Kerala.

This is particularly interesting because it provides a much more concrete historical date than the traditional AD 427 foundation date.
Its location is particularly picturesque. The basilica is situated in the Kuttanad region, surrounded by Kerala’s waterways, paddy fields and coconut groves, with the Pamba River forming an important part of the landscape. Kerala Tourism specifically highlights the church’s riverbank setting and its importance as a Christian pilgrimage destination

Dakshina Tirupathi Sri Venkiteshwara Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Sri Venkiteshwara (Venkateswara/Srinivasa) at Chingavanam, near Kottayam, Kerala.
.
.
“Dakshina Tirupathi” literally means “Southern Tirupathi.” The temple is associated with the worship of Lord Venkateshwara, the form of Lord Vishnu who is the presiding deity of the famous Tirumala temple in Andhra Pradesh.

The name reflects the intention of providing devotees in Kerala with a place where they can offer prayers to Sri Venkateshwara without having to travel all the way to Tirumala.
.
.
Sri Venkiteshwara is a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, also known as:

* Srinivasa
* Venkateswara
* Balaji
* Govinda

In the Tirumala tradition, Venkateshwara is especially revered as the Lord who protects and blesses devotees during Kali Yuga. The traditional story connects him with Mahalakshmi and Padmavati.
.
.
The Chingavanam temple is particularly meaningful for devotees of the Vaishnava tradition. People visit for:

* Darshan of Sri Venkiteshwara
* Offering prayers for family well-being and prosperity
* Special poojas and offerings
* Festivals associated with Vishnu/Venkateshwara
* A quieter devotional experience compared with the enormous crowds at Tirumala

The temple is located at Chingavanam, Kerala 686531.
.
.
If your objective is peaceful darshan, I’d recommend a weekday morning, preferably early.

If your objective is to experience the temple’s full devotional atmosphere, visit during a major festival or Ekadashi—but expect considerably more devotees.

For Kerala generally, October–February is also more comfortable for travelling than the hotter months. But for this particular temple, the best day depends more on its pooja/festival calendar than on weather.

Kottayam has a special kind of beauty during the monsoon—the rain doesn’t just fall on the landscape; it seems to transform it.

Kottayam’s green paddy fields, rubber plantations, coconut groves and waterways become intensely fresh after rain. The district’s landscape is naturally rich in greenery and backwaters, especially around Kumarakom and Vembanad Lake

the rain doesn’t merely decorate the landscape—it becomes part of the landscape’s identity. The mist over the hills, the sound of rain on coconut leaves, the smell of wet earth, and the deep greens together create an almost romantic, melancholic Kerala aesthetic.
