The role of a High Performance Coach is not limited to physical training, but also involves taking care of the mind. The industry now requires a holistic approach to health. We provide advanced coaching with a focus on mental health first aid and powerful mental skills to help clients overcome their mental barriers.

Sometimes, the mind can be the obstacle to achieving movement and health, and a holistic approach is necessary. At FTI, our students have the power to change lives through their work as High Performance Coaches.

“I haven’t been active today.”

Does that mean you haven’t moved, or that you haven’t worked out?

Daily active living was central to our conversation with Paul Batman. Walking for transport, gardening, household tasks and activities with family all bring movement into the day. Looking only at gym attendance leaves much of that activity out of the conversation.

Paul also reflected on changing his approach to intensity after a heart attack. His quote in the artwork describes his experience; it isn’t evidence that excessive exercise and sedentary living have identical health effects.

For coaches, there are two things to understand: how someone moves through their day, and what they believe makes that movement worthwhile.

A client might enjoy walking yet dismiss it because it wasn’t hard enough. They might understand the need for a lighter session but feel guilty about doing less. Ask what they think they’re losing when they ease off.

Does activity have to feel demanding for you to count it?

What changes when you change the grip?

In this week’s video, Tarek explores a pronated-to-neutral hold, thumb involvement and different pulling angles for grip-endurance training.

Watch how the movement changes alongside the grasp. Do the elbows flare? Does the person introduce more rotation through the lower back? Can they maintain the hold as they work through the variation?

Those observations can help you select a challenge that suits the person. Try one change at a time so you can compare positions and hear where they feel the difference.

What do you look for before introducing another grip variation?

FROM EXPERIENCE TO EDUCATION. 📖

A personal milestone worth sharing.

The Hybrid Racing Conditioning Coach course I developed and wrote for FTI Global has officially received approval from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) as a continuing education course, carrying 0.8 CECs.

This one means a lot to me.

Years of coaching, racing, experimenting, making mistakes, asking questions and connecting the dots have now become something I can share with other coaches.

And just to be clear, this isn't another HYROX certification.

Think of it as a blueprint for understanding and coaching hybrid racing.

It's not just about repeating race stations or putting athletes through exhausting workouts. It's about understanding WHY athletes struggle, HOW fatigue affects performance and WHAT coaches can do to prepare them better.

The course explores four key demands : Metabolic, Mechanical, Technical and Tactical ; connecting strength, endurance, movement, programming and race strategy.

It's about understanding the principles behind hybrid racing, not just memorising a race format.

Less random suffering. More purposeful conditioning.

A special thank you to Jacq for the trust, belief and opportunity to contribute something meaningful to coach education. And to FTI Global, thank you for providing the platform to turn practical coaching experience into structured learning.

There's something incredibly rewarding about seeing an idea evolve from notes, research and discussions into a workbook, a workshop and now an ACE-approved course.

Still learning. Still refining. Still connecting the dots.

And hopefully, helping other coaches do the same.

“I use this on a daily basis inside my company.”

That’s how Will Foden describes the application of his Mental Skills learning at Built For Pressure.

In his testimonial, Will talks about developing his interpersonal skills, simplifying his consultancy process and connecting physical preparation with mental performance. He also describes becoming more aware of his own thinking and responses.

We’re delighted to hear what he’s taken into practice. Thank you, Will, for sharing your experience so generously.

What skill would you like to develop further as a coach: listening, questioning or managing your own response under pressure?

Our next Mental Skills Level 1 intake is February 2027. Explore the program via the link in bio.

If someone knows exercise matters but keeps avoiding it, what would help you understand why?

Paul Batman joins Tarek Michael-Chouja and Jay Hedley in Episode 8 of Inside the Performer’s Mind to explore participation, purpose and how our reasons for training can change.

Paul shares the experience that reshaped his approach to fitness, reflects on training intensity and describes people finding movement through everyday activities and community. They also discuss prolonged sitting and why a scheduled workout may tell only part of someone’s activity story.

For coaches, there’s plenty to consider before prescribing the next session. What does the person enjoy? What would greater physical capacity allow them to do? Where could movement fit into their day?

What have you learned about a client that changed how you approached their training?

We are also excited to share that our next Mental Skills Level 1 intake has been announced for February 2027.

Part 18 of our illustration series explores lumbo-pelvic rhythm: how the lumbar spine and pelvis coordinate during a forward bend and return to standing.

As you bend, the pelvis rotates forwards relative to the thighs and the lumbar spine flexes. Both contribute to moving the trunk forwards. Hip and lumbar extension contribute to the return.

For coaches, the point is to observe where the movement comes from. Watch the pelvis and lower-back curve throughout the repetition, rather than judging the movement only by how far the person reaches.

Someone may use a different combination of hip and lumbar movement on the way up than on the way down.

What do you notice first when watching a forward bend?

BEYOND THE WORKOUT. 🇮🇩

📍 14–15 Oktober | Fit Hub Jakarta 🇮🇩

And a special thank you to my lovely Eva ❤️ for being there and capturing all these wonderful moments. The memories wouldn't be the same without you. 📸

Until the next one, Jakarta! 🇮🇩 by @ftiglobal
